POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a motivated Underwriting Analyst I to join our growing TPA and employee benefits advisory firm. This entry-level role is ideal for a recent college graduate, early-career professional (0–2 years of experience) or someone looking for a career change who is analytical, detail-oriented, and eager to build expertise in health plan pricing, claims analysis, and employer benefit strategy.

In this role, you will partner closely with senior underwriters, consultants, and account teams to evaluate historical claims data, support renewal projections, prepare stop-loss underwriting submissions, and develop financial models that help employers make informed decisions about their benefit programs.

You’ll receive structured training, hands-on mentorship, and exposure to real client scenarios—along with a clear path for career growth within underwriting and consulting.

JOB ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support senior underwriters in preparing renewal projections for self-funded and fully insured health plans
  • Perform medical and pharmacy claims data reporting and analysis, including experience summaries, large-claim reports, utilization dashboards, and trend exhibits
  • Analyze historical claims to identify cost drivers, emerging risks, and plan performance insights
  • Assist with stop-loss marketing and underwriting submissions, including claims data preparation, census review, and disclosure materials
  • Build and maintain pricing models, spreadsheets, and forecasting tools
  • Support plan design modeling and cost-impact analysis
  • Prepare charts, summaries, and exhibits for client presentations and renewal meetings
  • Validate data accuracy and reconcile claims, enrollment, and financial reports
  • Partner with account managers, consultants, and operations teams to meet client deliverables and deadlines
  • Maintain underwriting documentation and workpapers in accordance with internal standards
  • Develop working knowledge of regulatory and compliance concepts affecting underwriting, including ERISA and self-funded plan structures

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Business Analytics, Health Administration, related field or job experience (preferred but not required)
  • Internship or experience analyzing data and/or working in excel
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, basic modeling)
  • Attention to detail and ability to work with large datasets
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn complex healthcare topics
  • Willingness to obtain a Life & Health insurance license within the first 90 days (required; company-supported)

 WORK ENVIRONMENT and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily office-based or remote with occasional travel for client meetings.
  • Frequent use of computer and phone; extended periods of sitting and screen time.
  • Occasional lifting of materials under 20 lbs.
