Policy and Research Intern

Transit Alliance is a non-profit organization advocating for a Miami built for people, not cars. Through data-driven research, community engagement, and policy advocacy we are freeing Miami from traffic by equipping people to influence transit decisions.

Policy and Research Intern

Compensation
This is a paid position with salary or stipend range defined by programs available to the student through their educational institution or third-party scholarship. Transit Alliance Miami is willing to provide matching funds and accommodate class credit arrangements where possible. This internship runs for 10 consecutive weeks: Monday, May 4th, through Friday, July 10th, with an expected 15-20 hours of work weekly, totaling at least 150 hours.

Job Description
As Policy and Research Intern, you will help Transit Alliance Miami advance evidence-based advocacy through rigorous research, data analysis, and policy development. This role offers practical experience in transportation policy, urban planning research, and legislative analysis while contributing directly to campaigns that shape Miami's transportation future. This position will report directly to the Policy and Advocacy Manager, as well as coordinate with the rest of Transit Alliance staff.

This role is flexible on location from fully remote to in-person, with a preference for a hybrid structure of 60% remote and 40% in-person work.

Areas of responsibility will include some or all of the following:

  • Conduct research on transportation policy, urban planning, and mobility trends
  • Analyze transit data and ridership patterns across Miami-Dade County
  • Support development of policy briefs and position papers
  • Track local, state, and federal legislation affecting transportation
  • Assist with community survey design and data collection
  • Prepare briefing materials for meetings with elected officials
  • Compile case studies from peer cities and best practices
  • Support grant research and proposal development


 

Required Skills

  • Strong writing proficiency and oral communication
  • Proficiency in Excel and/or Google Sheets
  • Strong research experience (i.e.., using research databases, judging reliable sources, identifying biases, leveraging primary and secondary sources, citing appropriately)
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently with flexible scheduling
  • Strong interpersonal abilities, experience in customer service preferred

 

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with Miami-Dade’s government structure and functions
  • Interest in transportation policy
  • Experience writing research briefings or memos
  • Data visualization experience (charts, 
  • Project management skills
