The University: The University of Akron is a major, metropolitan, state assisted university. The University has a long tradition of serving the needs of part-time and full-time students through day and evening classes, and it attracts traditional-age students and adult students of all economic, social, and ethnic backgrounds. The 170-acre campus, with 73 buildings, is within walking distance of downtown Akron and is in a metropolitan area of 2.8 million people.
The Department of Student Life: The Department of Student Life is housed in the Student Union. The Student Union is a 192,500 square foot facility that houses food shops, Union Market, bookstore, convenience store, Dunkin, student organization offices, game room, theatre, information center, copy center, meeting rooms, program spaces, and administrative offices. The SOuRCe is a functional unit within the Department of Student Life.
The Position:SOuRCe Liaisons report to the SOuRCe Student Manager and/or the Assistant Director, Student Organizations & Involvement. SOuRCe Liaisons are part of the SOuRCe staff, which works to provide the resources necessary for organizations to have a successful year and to promote involvement while creating opportunities for students to actively engage in campus life. The goals of the SOuRCe team are to support organizations, enhance growth and individual involvement in student organizations on campus which ultimately assists with the University retention strategy.
Responsibilities: Characteristics, duties and responsibilities of SOuRCe Liaison include:
Customer Service
Provide timely, courteous, and professional service to student organizations and the campus community. Serve in a front-desk role within the Student Organization Resource Center.
Administrative Support
Answer phone calls and emails, and assist with filing, packages, and mail for the Resource Center. Assist with processing and documenting various student organization forms and approvals, including (but not limited to) space request forms, roster or advisor update forms, item check-out forms, organization registration forms, and event request forms.
Financial Paperwork
Process financial paperwork including spend requests (expenditures), USG/GSG allocations, deposits, reconciliations, and other related financial tasks. Liaisons may occasionally handle substantial monetary deposits, requiring a high degree of accuracy. A proven ability to perform basic to advanced mathematical calculations is required.
Programming and Initiative Support
Assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of SOuRCe programs, events, and initiatives, including in-office programs, large-scale events (e.g., RooFest, Officer Training, Annual Registration), and communication campaigns such as social media posts and newsletters. Assist in developing and administering surveys and evaluations for SOuRCe programs, initiatives, and events.
Liaison
Serve as a point of contact between student organizations and the Department of Student Life. Support organizations in achieving their goals by addressing concerns, revising constitutions, managing finances, and providing general guidance on student leadership. Ensure appropriate follow-up with the Student Manager and/or professional staff members.
Communication
Support and enhance communication and collaboration among student organizations. Communicate regularly with organization leaders and advisors via email, phone, and RooConnect. Attend weekly SOuRCe staff meetings and bi-annual department retreats. Participate in presentations about SOuRCe services, programs, and involvement opportunities, including outreach events, student involvement fairs, and admissions events.
Training
Participate in all required SOuRCe trainings and staff meetings to remain informed of policies and regulations affecting SOuRCe and student organizations. Training includes customer service, policy compliance, use of the VISA system, the UAF funding process, and general SOuRCe orientation.
RooConnect
Demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and progressively master RooConnect, including its subsystems such as the financial system. Serve as a point of reference and assist in training student organization leaders and members on the system.
Other Duties
Assist with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be an active member of at least one (1) registered student organization. Officer position experience preferred.
- Able and willing to work at least 10 hours/week.
- Be friendly, enthusiastic and a self-motivator who is customer service oriented.
- Polite, friendly, and dedicated to work with others and display a positive attitude toward the student union, its mission statement, and the University of Akron.
- This position requires knowledge of Microsoft Excel and in general, Microsoft Office. Training for the University systems is provided.
All University of Akron student employees must meet the designated minimum standards as stated on the Student Employment Eligibility Chart. UA student employees must be 18 years or older at the time of their start date. Any approved remote work conducted by student employees MUST be performed within the state of Ohio.
