Education Manager

Location: Fort Belvoir, VA

Salary Range: $75,000 – $85,000 annually

Position Summary

The company is seeking an experienced Education Manager to lead educational programming staff in a dynamic, visitor-facing museum environment for our Programs and Education – Experiential Learning Center contract. This is a hands-on management role focused on coaching staff, overseeing performance, evaluating educational programming, and ensuring high editorial, interpretive, and presentation standards across all education deliverables.

This position requires strong subject-matter expertise in military history, with the ability to evaluate historical accuracy, interpretive balance, and neutrality across all written and oral programming. The Education Manager reports to and works in close partnership with Bloomsburie’s Contract Manager and collaborates daily with the government client to ensure educational programming aligns with the museum’s mission, contractual requirements, and established interpretive standards.

The role is execution-focused and operational in nature, emphasizing quality control, staff development, and day-to-day operational excellence.

Reporting & Working Relationships

  • Reports directly to Bloomsburie’s Contract Manager
  • Works alongside Bloomsburie’s Contract Manager and the government client
  • Ensures military history interpretation remains accurate, balanced, and neutral in accordance with Government approved frameworks and Standard Operating Procedures

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coach, and support education and customer service staff
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback, mentoring, and professional development
  • Evaluate educational programming to ensure military and historical accuracy, interpretive quality, and visitor engagement
  • Review, edit, and provide detailed feedback on staff-written materials, interpretive plans, and program submissions prior to client review and approval
  • Ensure all written and oral deliverables meet stated objectives, interpretive standards, and learning goals, and encourage historical thinking and reasoning
  • Work closely with the client to support daily education operations and program delivery
  • Manage staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage across all programs
  • Step in to lead or deliver educational programs during staffing shortages
  • Ensure team members prepare materials and supplies required for educational activities (e.g., paper, templates, program materials) are prepared and available
  • Deliver clear, accurate, and engaging historical and military history presentations as required
  • Report staffing, programming, and operational updates to Bloomsburie’s Contract Manager

Operational Requirements

  • Must successfully complete all required government trainings and intensive certification processes for assigned programs
  • Must attend daily museum huddles and be present during operating hours (8:15 a.m. – 5:15 p.m.)
  • Must attend weekly meetings with the government team and weekly museum-wide sync meetings

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in museum education, public history, or education programming
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing staff
  • Master’s degree in American History, Military History, Revolutionary War or Early American History, or U.S. History
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of military history, particularly in a public history or educational context
  • Strong professional writing, editing, and oral presentation skills
  • Proven ability to evaluate, revise, and improve interpretive and educational content for accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness
  • Experience delivering interactive, educator-led programs for diverse age groups
  • Experience developing or delivering programs aligned with GSTEM-based competencies
  • Experience delivering history-based presentations to student audiences and adapting content by age groups and audience
  • Strong professional writing, editing, and oral presentation skills
  • Must be able to follow procedures, enforce Standard Operating Procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Military service or professional military experience
  • Experience working in government, military, or federally contracted museum environments
  • Girl or Boy Scouts experience
