Human Resources Intern (Summer 2026)

This posting is for a part time Human Resources Summer Intern located in the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG), which is a division of the NC Department of Public Safety (DPS). This internship is expected to start on May 18, 2026 and continue through July 24, 2026. The work schedule is part-time (up to 30 hours per week), Monday -Friday. The rate of pay is $18.00 per hour.
The North Carolina National Guard currently employs over 300 permanent and temporary employees but is expanding. The Human Resources Office will assist in creating additional positions and processing reclassifications due to restructure of the organization.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Providing information by answering communications; referring special communications to appropriate person.
• Maintaining human resources personnel and medical records.
• Maintaining manager and employee confidence by keeping human resources information confidential.
• Updating job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
• Accomplish human resources and organization mission by completing tasks as needed.
• Managing HR records including applications, applicant logs, and employee forms.
• Responding to HR-related queries within the company.
• Assisting with the distribution of training material.
• Assisting with new employee onboarding.
• Contributing to recruitment efforts
• Assisting HR Manager and staff with day-to-day HR operations.
Applicants are expected to have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; the ability to handle confidential matters with tact and discretion; the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely; the ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions within the area of responsibility; and possess the ability to learn and apply rules, procedures, and practices for various human resources management activities or personnel actions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.
The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences, including Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Managers may also choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
