Summer Reporting Internship

Summer Reporting Internship: Bay City News & LocalNewsMatters.org

ABOUT US

Bay City News (BCN) is a regional newswire and the foundational backbone of the San Francisco Bay Area’s news ecosystem. Our nonprofit affiliate, LocalNewsMatters.org, provides essential public-service journalism to about 9.3 million residents across 13 counties—from Mendocino to Marin to Monterey.

We are a small but mighty team that targets geographic and topical "news deserts." By distributing our content to nearly every major media outlet in the region, we stand as the backbone of the Bay Area news ecosystem and ensure critical information reaches the public.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for up to three motivated college interns to join us for an 8-week summer reporting program. This is not a typical internship reporting for one host newsroom. Reporting for the Bay City News wire means your byline is likely to appear in multiple major media outlets across the greater Bay Area.

During the summer, you will cover:

  • General Assignment Reporting: Short and accurate coverage of local breaking news events, government and crime, among other topics.
  • Enterprise Journalism: In-depth reporting on critical issues like the environment, arts and culture, housing, local government and more.
  • A Capstone Project: All interns develop a significant capstone piece on a topic that interests them (with editor approval). Past projects have included in-depth data journalism articles, photojournalism essays, audio or even business-related projects that support newsroom development and sustainability.

WHO YOU ARE

  • A Resourceful Reporter: You have good news judgment and can work independently in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment.
  • Community-Focused: You understand the importance of local news in strengthening democracy and are eager to report on underserved communities.
  • Technically Curious: You are comfortable working with remote tools and interested in how new technology—including data and AI—can enhance journalism but not replace real human journalists.
  • Experienced: You have some experience with school publications or journalism classes. Bilingual skills and knowledge of the Bay Area are significant pluses.

THE DETAILS

  • Duration: 8 weeks during the summer (flexible start/end dates).
  • Location: Must reside in one of our 13 counties (see map here: https://localnewsmatters.org/about-bay-city-news/) to cover news in your community and attend occasional in-person staff retreats and training.
  • Requirements: Coverage of some night meetings is required.

HOW TO APPLY

Become part of the pathway for the next generation of journalists. Many of our interns have transitioned into part-time or full-time roles with full benefits.

To apply, please send a cover letter, two clips or links to your work, and a resume to Katherine Rowlands at kat@baycitynews.com with Aly Brown CC’d (aly@baycitynews.com).
