Grant Writing and Fundraising
Position Details:
2+ years of grant writing experience required
Witness to Mass Incarceration is seeking an intern to operate their grants management calendar. Applicants should be comfortable doing research and be detail-oriented. This position entails looking for government, corporate, and foundation grants through a number of different sources. Following the research, all relevant grants will be posted and kept on a calendar that the intern is expected to keep current.
Responsibilities and Expected Outcomes:
- Develop knowledge of all of WITNESS' program areas in order to know what grants to look for
- Research foundation grants either through online services or a library
- Report to staff on the foundation grants prior to listing them on the calendar
- Research corporate grants through corporate directories and through Form 990s (IRS reports)
- Provide staff with a listing of potential corporate grants
- Develop grant leads through federal government agencies like the Department of Labor, Health & Human Services, etc.
- Develop grant leads through state government agencies
- Develop relationships with state elected officials
- Develop grant leads through city government agencies
- Develop relationships with city elected officials
Qualifications, Credentials, and Technical Skills Required:
- Undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate student with experience in research
- 2+ years of grantwriting experience required
- Professional phone and email communication is required
- Flexible and self-motivated
- Detail oriented, with the ability to prioritize under deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products, specifically Word and Excel, as well as Internet search tools
- Previous experience in research
- Understanding of or prior work/volunteer experience in non-profit organizations is preferred
Internships are available in the fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters.
Because this is an unpaid internship, Witness to Mass Incarceration is happy to provide recommendations or references for all interns. In terms of internship credit, some educational institutions require prior approval before the start of an internship. It is the responsibility of the student to check with their institution to be sure they meet any requirements before they accept a position.
