Promise Center Job Description for Reading Tutor
In partnership with Carlow University, The Promise Center is dedicated to bringing the power of reading to every learner.
Position Overview
Tutors support students in structured, phonics-based reading, writing, and math instruction, as well as homework completion, while learning alongside a Lead Tutor. This role supports students receiving instruction in person as well as those participating through online learning platforms. The position is ideal for individuals interested in literacy, education, or working with children who need additional academic support.
Key Responsibilities
- Support students during small-group or 1:1 phonics instruction.
- Reinforce skills taught by the Lead Tutor using provided lessons and materials or create lessons based on student needs
- Diagnostically teach using an evidence based structured literacy approach (Orton Gillingham, Wilson, UFLI, LETRS)
- Provide encouragement and help students stay engaged and focused.
- Maintain a positive, patient, and supportive learning environment.
- Continuous progress monitoring to drive instruction
- Communicate student progress or concerns to the Tutor Lead.
Qualifications
- Certified Reading Specialist, OG practitioner, or Wilson Reading System tutor (50.00/hr)
- Trained and experienced tutor using a structured literacy approach (30.00/hr)
- Ability to follow directions and instructional routines.
- Reliable, responsible, and consistent with scheduling.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Experience working with children in a school, tutoring, or after-school setting
