Position Title: Environmental Resources Compliance Intern

Hours: $15.16/hr., max 29 hrs. a week
Position Summary:
The City of Delray Beach is currently seeking a student to assist with backflow prevention and environmental compliance programs. This internship offers hands-on learning opportunities for students interested in environmental science, engineering, or utilities. Under the guidance of the Environmental Resources Compliance Manager, the intern will support inspections, testing, and basic maintenance of backflow prevention devices that help protect the City’s drinking water system. The intern will also participate in field visits, assist with data collection and recordkeeping, and gain exposure to local and state environmental regulations. This position is designed to provide practical experience and insight into municipal operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with inspecting, testing, and maintaining backflow prevention assemblies to ensure proper operation and water system protection.
- Support cross-connection control, sanitary surveys, and compliance inspections at City and industrial facilities.
- Help collect samples, document findings, complete inspection reports, and maintain program records for audits and regulatory tracking.
- Assist with monitoring and supporting City compliance with environmental programs, including Industrial Pretreatment, Well-field Protection, and Backflow Prevention.
- Communicate professionally with City staff, contractors, and regulatory agencies, and assist during inspections, follow-ups, and emergency response activities as needed.
Skills Set:
- Strong attention to detail, organizational, oral and written communication skills
- Prefer candidates that are majoring in Environmental Science, Engineering, Public Health, or related field
- Ability to analyze assigned problems, gather and organize data, and arrive at valid conclusions
