Medical Assistant
SUMMARY
The mission of Sacred Heart Mercy Health Care Center is to provide comprehensive medical care to those most in need in our area. The Clinic is an apostolate of the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, MI, with the care provided flowing from the charism of Mercy.
Medical Assistants are responsible for direct care of our patients including obtaining vital signs and initial history at time of visit, assisting with nurse visits for blood pressure checks, phlebotomy, and other procedures as needed. They also triage patient calls and keep our patients connected with the Providers through clear communication. They are key in helping our patients feel welcomed and cared for during their visits. Medical Assistants rotate through different roles each week and must demonstrate flexibility and ability to independently complete tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Rooming of patients, including taking vitals and ensuring that medication lists are current
- Identify all medications and other orders the patient will need
- Having the room prepared with the necessary equipment and supplies for type of appointment
- Cleaning and sanitizing the room post patient encounter
- Perform EKG testing on patients and assist with other procedures as needed
- Administer all vaccinations and perform all lab draws as required
- Review, label and follow-up on EHR documents in the clinical inboxes
- Communicate testing results and other messages to patients as instructed by providers
- Independently close gaps in patients’ charts
- Triage phone calls and use appropriate judgement on what items need to be escalated to the providers
- Prepare and set out lab draws for pickup by the outside laboratory
- Abstraction of new patient charts into the Electronic Health Record
- Inventory of vaccinations and other medicines as directed
- General cleaning and sanitization of the clinic
- Completing required ongoing training
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Graduate or equivalent, additional education preferred
- Completed course work specific to this position or equivalent experience including the appropriate certificate for Medical Assistants or equivalent
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Alignment with Clinic mission
- Ability to use sound judgement in the processing of telephone and inbox inquiries
- Demonstrate professionalism while dealing with patients and other staff members
- Demonstrate proficiency using practice management systems (e.g., Athena)
- Flexibility in assisting with other tasks for the clinic as needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Mobility and ability to sit, bend, reach and lift 40 lbs.
- Manual and physical dexterity needed to assist patients
- Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on computer display screen, in hand-written forms, and printed on paper
- Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone
