Peer Advisor - Student Financial Service Center - Work Study Required

This work‐study student position within the Student Financial Service Center is responsible for providing a high level of customer service to students and families by sharing accurate information regarding student finances in a friendly and timely manner across e‐mail, phone, and in person services.

Job Duties:

Essential Duties

  • Assist students and families with the financial aid application process, billing and payment procedures, and student financial policies. This is done via phone, email, and in-person contact. - 80% Approx. Percent Time Applied Over One Year
  • Assist full-time staff from the Student Financial Service Center with various projects as needed. - 10% Approx. Percent Time Applied Over One Year
  • Assist with work from other department units to achieve departmental goals. - 5% Approx. Percent Time Applied Over One Year
  • Maintain a clean and inviting reception area. - 5% Approx. Percent Time Applied Over One Year
  • You will have an opportunity to develop all the “Panther Edge” competencies performing these duties.  For example, you will use Critical Thinking while problem solving complex questions.  You will improve your Communication skills by answering questions via phone, email, and in-person contact.

Additional Duties

Attend regular staff meetings. Maintain a consistently positive attitude while working with staff, students, and supervisors. Handle special projects and duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Education Requirements: ·

  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study.
  • Retain at least half-time status (6 credits/semester) as a student at UWM.
  • At the time of hire student must possess and maintain a 2.50 cumulative GPA.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and experience in providing superior customer service, often under stressful conditions.

The candidate should be energetic, possess a strong work ethic, be self‐motivated, reliable, empathetic, and have a strong desire to help their fellow students, co‐workers, and other customers.  

Compensation & Evaluation

The starting wage for this position is $12.50/hour. This is determined with consideration of university guidance and comparable positions across campus. Employees will be evaluated once per year in accordance with the UWM Student Employee Manual found here: https://uwm.edu/hr/. Employees will be considered for a merit increase at the time of evaluation.
