This job is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit. To qualify students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period.
About the Position:
The interns will work with the Right-of-Way project group that focuses on design and construction administration of projects within the City’s Right-of-Ways. The projects include design and construction of roadways, sidewalks, curb and gutters and utilities. Typical tasks include support to project managers, designers or inspectors during the construction season.
These internships come with the opportunity to learn and perform a wide range of project activities. The position is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit.
Internships will begin Summer 2026. This is a seasonal, non-benefited position, not to exceed 6 months of employment.
About the Team:
The Community and Neighborhoods Engineering Division administers the design and procurement of construction projects funded by the City’s Capital Improvement Program and the Funding Our Future bond. Applicants for roles within the Engineering Division can expect to support projects that improve streets within the public right-of-way, office buildings, bikeways, and sidewalks – all important areas of the City’s growing infrastructure that everyone uses.
Position Salary Range: $20.00/hr.

Key Responsibilities:
- Collects data and reviews research materials, determines accuracy and validity of sources and appropriateness for use.
- Designs, develops, and conducts a variety of research projects; determines appropriate methodologies, information sources, sampling strategies, and data-collection tools, etc.
- Performs research activities by utilizing computer software to obtain and manipulate data.
- Writes or drafts technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.
- Other tasks as assigned.
- Complies with city and department policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, though summer internships may not require concurrent enrollment if student is in good standing with the educational institution.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Must have good organizational and analytical skills.
- Must have good computer skills.
Preferred Qualification:
- Actively pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
Working Conditions:
- Moderate physical effort, comfortable working conditions, and handling of light weights. Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking may be required. Subject to extended exposure to computer visual display terminals.
- Moderate exposure to disagreeable elements such as cold, dampness, and heat from adverse weather conditions.
