Student Support Assistant - Students with Disabilities

STUDENT SUPPORT ASSISTANT - STUDENT WITH DISABILITIES

 

SUMMARY

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in reinforcing instruction on primarily a one-on-one basis and occasionally in small groups of students with disabilities. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Assist students with personal hygiene and self-help skills. Perform medical procedures and administer first aid and medications to students in accordance with State laws and District procedures. Under the general guidance of certificated personnel, assist in meeting the physical, educational, and social-emotional needs of students.

   REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Develop and maintain effective communication with students, teacher, school staff, and parents.
  • Assist with the implementation of IEPs; confer with the teacher concerning IEPs, lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.
  • Assist student with meeting IEP goals and objectives and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Support students by answering questions, providing proper examples, providing emotional support and a friendly attitude.
  • Assist in the preparation, processing and duplication of various forms and documents.
  • Interact with, escort and monitor students during field trips, physical education and other recreational activities asdirected.
  • Assist students with performing and developing independent living and self-help skills as assigned.
  • Assist students with the development of social, vocational and job searching skills as assigned.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene including bathing, brushing teeth and grooming as required.
  • Assist student with eating activities, including feeding students who are unable to feed
  • themselves.
  • Toilet students and change diapers and soiled clothing as required.
  • Load and unload students on buses as directed; push students in wheelchairs; lift students in and out of orthopedic equipment and position students; assist students with adaptive devices as needed. May be required to assist students during home to school transportation.
  • Assist students with self-administering medication and/or administering medications as outlined in State laws and District procedures.
  • Provide routine first aid to injured students according to established District procedures.                                                         
  • Observe and assist in emergency situations involving aggressive or uncontrolled behavior of identified students in accordance with approved Crisis Preventative Intervention (CPI) procedures as trained. Report progress regarding student performance and behavior to assist students to achieve their personal best.                                           
  • Implement positive behavior intervention strategies for students; model identified behavioral techniques including positive behavior interventions and reinforcement strategies as identified by theteacher.
  • Perform routine clerical duties and record keeping such as taking roll, collecting monies, completing forms and correcting papers.
  • Set up work areas and prepare bulletin boards and displays.
  • Assist students requiring specialized health care procedures (e.g. toileting, tube feeding, suctioning, EPI-Pen) and address immediate health care needs to allow students to function in a school environment.
  • Perform medical procedures according to established guidelines, including catheterization, NG tube feeding, changing tracheotomy tubes and ties, machine suctioning, colostomy/ileostomy care, gastrostomy feeding, mechanical ventilation, nasal cannula, oxygen supplementation, syringe suctioning and related procedures.
  • Assist students with building self-esteem by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
  • Clean work areas (e.g. changing pillow cover, disposing of body fluids, wiping counters) to maintain a sanitary environment.
  • Lift and move students weighing up to 200 pounds with assistance.
  • Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Lift and move students up to and including high school age on to and off of wheelchairs and toilets.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledgeof

  • Basic instructional methods and techniques and subjects taught in schools.
  • Special issues, needs and requirements of students with disabilities.
  • Basic child guidance principles andpractices.
  • Motivational techniques.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Safe and sanitary practices in classroom and playground activities.
  • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
  • Basic record-keeping methods.
  • Operation of standard office equipment.
  • First Aid and CPR.

Ability to

  • Reinforce concepts and instruction to individual or small groups of special education students as lessons as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
  • Be patient and flexible in making quick changes in a daily lesson for individual or total group.
  • Use and identify indoor and outdoor recreational activities suitable for handicapped students.
  • Learn and apply school policies, methods, practices and terminology used in instructional programs.
  • Provide feedback to teachers as to how children are performing daily assigned tasks.
  • Tutor individual and/or small groups of students.
  • Use appropriate student behavior management strategies.              
  • Learn teacher developed behavioral strategies that increase student        independence, motivation, and self-esteem.
  • Learn district policies and procedures for managing and disciplining students.
  • Work with disabled students who may become combative.                 
  • Work with profoundly disabled students who require physical lifting, positioning, toileting, feeding, and grooming activities.
  • Apply safety practices involved in the lifting, moving and transport of students with special needs.
  • Assist students in basic needs such as eating and toileting.
  • Implement specialized instructional and health procedures as directed by psychologists, health professionals and specialists.
  • Apply basic first aid techniques andpractices.
  • Apply bloodborne pathogen safety procedures.
  • Perform clerical duties in support of special education program and classroom activities.
  • Operate standard office machines andequipment.
  • Understand and follow oral and writtendirections.
  • Use copy machines, computers, and other equipment to prepare learning materials and resources.
  • Communicate thoughts, ideas, information, and messages in writing.
  • Interpret and implement lesson plans developed by the teacher.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with the teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality about all personal information, assessment results, and other records concerning students and their families.
  • Use patience and tact in working with students with disabilities.
  • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with fellow workers and members of the public.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education

  •  High School Diploma or Equivalent

Experience

  • At least one year of experience working in an Instructional Aide classification and experience working with students with disabilities is desirable.

Licenses/Certificates

  • First Aide is required
  • CPR certification is required

(Employees will be required to obtain these certifications within five months of employment)

 

WORKING CONDITIONS WHICH MAY OCCUR

  • Work in a classroom protected from weather 1 - 6 hrs/day
  • Contact with blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials
  • Noise exposure under 65 decibels
