SUMMER EMPLOYMENT - UNIVERSITY HOUSING
STUDENT MECHANIC POSITION
University Housing is hiring students to join our Facilities team for Summer 2026! Summer Hiring Minimum Qualifications for All University Housing Student Employment Positions:
- You will not be graduating in Spring 2026 or Summer 2026 - must be enrolled for Fall 2026
- Satisfactory completion of University Criminal Background Check and University Housing & Campus Student & Guest Behavior Check.
- Completion of paperwork with UWM Human Resources.
- Students hired to work for University Housing Facilities during Summer 2026 will be expected to work 40 hours per week.
Assist University Housing Facilities staff with daily maintenance and repair tasks to support a safe, comfortable living environment for students. Perform hands-on work such as light fixture replacement, lock and drywall repairs, basic plumbing and HVAC maintenance, and window screen or blind repair. Follow safety guidelines and contribute to special projects as assigned. Work collaboratively with full-time staff while completing tasks independently, demonstrating responsibility, attention to detail, strong customer service skills, and a positive attitude.
MECHANIC POSITION EXPECTATIONS
- Be on good behavioral standing with University Housing.
- Demonstrate qualities of leadership, responsibility, and maturity. Previous work experience with maintenance procedures preferred.
- Must have strong customer service skills, strong attention to detail, ability to follow directions, and be able to complete work assignments as a team member as well as work independently.
- Willingness to accept new responsibilities and challenges while learning in the position.
- Work collaboratively with the full-time Facilities staff and direct supervisor(s).
- Remain sensitive to others and maintain a genuine interest in working for students’ best interests.
- Maintain a positive attitude towards students, staff, and University Housing.
- Act as a role model for students and staff by demonstrating qualities of leadership, responsibility, and maturity.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform maintenance repair as assigned by full time maintenance staff. This includes but is not limited to: replacement of light bulbs and fixtures; lock repairs; drywall repairs; carpet replacement; window screen and blind repair/replacement; plumbing repairs; and HVAC maintenance.
- Transport carpets and supplies to needed areas.
- Remove and install carpet.
- Remove and replace furniture from lounge or suite.
- Safely operate power tools, hand tools, and electronic devices.
- Track repair progress and completion of work orders.
- Follow safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
- Assist with special projects as assigned.

Team members must work together to accomplish tasks in small groups. This requires and helps develop strong communication and collaboration skills.
Staff members work with the student population within the residence halls. They have to act professionally when interacting with the housing population.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to safely operate power tools, hand tools, and various types of knives. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to handle constant bending twisting and kneeling and be able to climb up and down ladders, stairs, and scaffolding. Must be able to handle a work environment that includes dust, fumes, commercial cleaning products, adhesives, and latex products.
The estimated start date for this position is May 16 2026. Students hired for this position will be expected to report to work on the start date. If hired, the following days in May are mandatory work days and cannot be skipped / missed: 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31. The end date of the position is estimated to be August 29, 2026.
- If a student has completed finals early, then they can begin working early during finals week (May 15-16 and 18-22, 2026).
- Online Training: All Summer Facilities new hires are required to complete online training. If you hired for a Summer Facilities position, you will receive more information at a later date on the online training expectations / requirements.
Students will also be expected to work 40 hours per week during their summer employment. If students would like to take off any days of work (for example, for a family vacation) this must be discussed with their supervisor in advance. If students are taking summer classes, they must inform their supervisor and their work hours will be scheduled around those classes.
