Engineering Student Worker/Intern - Environmental Services Division

Are you a current student or attending college in the fall of 2026 and looking for an internship that enables you to learn new skills and gain experience in a wide variety of water resources and engineering fields?  If so, we have a great opportunity for you!  Our Environmental Services Division is looking to hire one Student Worker/Intern for the summer months in 2026.

Work Location: Environmental Services Division - 51 E. 1st Street, Superior, WI

Starting Wage Range: $18.55 - $20.18 per hour
 

Hours: Temporary position, up to full-time (prefer full-time), Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; 40 hours/week (summer months).

 

DEFINITION:

Under close to general supervision depending on the class level, performs any of a wide variety of field or office tasks that may include public contact or research; assists in the performance of unskilled, skilled, clerical, technical or professional duties; and performs other work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Incumbents in this class are restricted to temporary, non-benefitted employment status. The purpose of this classification is to provide practical and meaningful work experience related to the student's field of study. City employment should provide the student with exposure to a specific field as a potential or chosen career area. Normally employment will be during breaks in the school year or employment during the school year as part of an internship, work experience or other program sponsored by an accredited educational institution.

 

Employment Standards:

TYPICAL TASKS:

Duties will vary in nature according to the department assigned and may include heavy manual field or office work, operating field or office equipment, providing information to the public, gathering and analyzing data, preparing reports or other work products and assisting with technical or professional work.

Performs civil engineering related tasks such as assisting on field surveys, infrastructure inspection, drafting, mapping and construction project development and inspection. Uses surveying, inspection and equipment such as GPS, total stations, and other engineering equipment  as needed.  
 

  1. Performs field work, studies, surveys and inspections of City infrastructure (new and existing) such as stormwater control measures, outfalls, swales, storm sewers and drainage-ways.
  2. Focus of work will be storm water treatment and conveyance.
  3. Assists inspection of construction for compliance with contract provisions, standard specifications, and applicable codes.
  4. Documents inspections using approved manuals and forms.
  5. Creates basic maps, layouts and figures from templates. Advanced GIS tasks may be assigned based on experience or field of study. 
  6. Assists the public in answering questions and concerns regarding stormwater and engineering related topics.


 

Knowledge and Ability: Commensurate to work assignment.

Education: Specific academic course work related or preparatory to the work assignment.

 

Requirements/Special Requirements:

Requires full time enrollment when school is in session as determined by the school  

            AND

Student Worker II     -    graduation from high school

Student Worker III    -    completion of two years of college

Student Worker IV    -    graduation from a four year college or university and enrollment in an accredited post graduate program
 

Driver's License Requirement: Must possess valid driver's license or be able to provide suitable transportation as may be required of the assignment and as approved by the department head.

Residency Requirement: No residency requirement.

Post Job Offer Medical Examination and Drug Screen: Must pass a pre-employment drug screen. Depending on assignment, may also require a lifting evaluation or blood borne pathogen evaluation/training.
