Summary

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) is seeking an Accountant to provide professional accounting advice and assistance. This role involves reviewing and modifying operating programs, establishing internal controls, and ensuring the integrity of financial information for the Department of Defense (DoD).

Note: This is NOT a remote work opportunity. This position is being filled under a Direct Hire Authority (DHA), and students may apply up to three months prior to completing their academic requirements.

Duties

Provide professional accounting advice and assistance on the application of generally accepted accounting principles.

Review, analyze, and modify operating programs and procedures related to accounting transactions.

Assist in establishing and monitoring internal controls to identify problem areas and improve program effectiveness.

Apply knowledge of automated data processing systems as they relate to accounting and "feeder" systems.

Perform special audits, studies, and analyses to evaluate the financial health of accounting operations.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

Must be suitable for Federal Employment and registered for Selective Service (if applicable).

Must undergo a background investigation and be able to obtain and maintain a favorable security clearance.

Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.

Must obtain and maintain a Level 2 DoD Financial Management (FM) Certification.

Qualifications

This position has a positive education requirement. You must meet one of the basic requirements below, which includes either a degree in accounting (or a related field with 24 semester hours in accounting) OR a combination of education and experience that includes 24 semester hours in accounting/auditing or a CPA/CIA certificate.

In addition to the basic requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience (or a qualifying education substitution):

For GS-05: Must meet the positive education requirement described above.

For GS-07: One year of experience processing accounting data or transactions.

For GS-09: One year of experience compiling, analyzing, and summarizing accounting data or preparing financial reports.

For GS-11: One year of experience interpreting and applying accounting principles, assisting in the design of internal controls, or ensuring the integrity of accounting processes.

Volunteer and unpaid experience that builds critical competencies is qualifying and will be credited. Veteran's preference does not apply under this Direct Hire Authority.

Education

A degree in accounting or a related field is required. You may also substitute higher education for the specialized experience requirement at various grade levels.

For GS-07: One full year of graduate-level education or Superior Academic Achievement (SAA).

For GS-09: A Master’s degree or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education.

For GS-11: A Ph.D. or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.
