USDA - Research Intern Frederick, MD (Paid)

Internship will support research on Synchytrium endobioticum, a federally regulated fungal pathogen that causes potato wart disease and threatens the $4 billion U.S. potato industry. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Assisting with culturing and maintenance of infected plant material - Supporting molecular diagnostics (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR) 
  • Participating in host-pathogen trials and disease rating 
  • Conducting literature reviews to support revision of the U.S. Recovery Plan for Potato Wart 
  • Documenting procedures and maintaining accurate research records 
  • Training in Select Agent safety and containment protocols

    Desired skills: 
  • Basic understanding of biology, plant pathology, microbiology, or fungal biology 
  • Familiarity with molecular techniques such as PCR or DNA extraction 
  • Experience working in laboratory or containment settings 
  • Comfort handling plant or soil samples and maintaining sterile technique 
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records 

These skills are helpful but not required—training will be provided to support learning and safe participation in research.
