3D Printing/Medical Illustration intern at CHOP
The Children’s Hospital Additive Manufacturing for Pediatrics (CHAMP) 3D Labs and Radiological Illustration & Visualization for Education & Research (RIVER) Medical Illustration are seeking motivated interns to join an interdisciplinary team to apply additive manufacturing, 3D modeling, and visual communication to clinical, educational, and research projects. Interns will contribute to the design, production, evaluation, and documentation of different projects, including patient-specific anatomical models, surgical planning aids, educational materials, and device prototypes. Under the supervision of CHAMP engineers, RIVER illustrators, and clinical researchers, interns will gain practical experience in a hospital setting and participate in projects that directly support patient care and clinician training.
The internship includes three possible tracks, which you will indicate your interest in when you apply through the Forms link at end of this description:
Engineering: Perform medical image segmentation, develop CAD models, prepare prints, and optimize printing workflows and materials for clinical applications.
Medical Illustration: create visual assets that support clinical and patient education, and radiology research communication.
Research: Design and conduct studies evaluating 3D studies or workflow implementation; perform data analysis and support manuscript or abstract preparation.
Key Responsibilities for all tracks
Lead assigned project(s) from conceptualization through prototyping in accordance with project timelines and supervisory guidance.
Engage in educational opportunities and hands-on experiences
Systematically document methods, results, and workflows suitable for research manuscripts, quality improvement records, presentations, and clinical handoff.
Communicate progress and findings in written reports and oral presentations to CHAMP staff and collaborate with clinical teams.
Adhere to institutional policies, including HIPAA, biosafety, and device handling procedures.
Perform additional duties assigned to support lab operations and collaborative projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Enrolled in a degree program in a related field (Engineering, Medical Illustration, Visual Communication, Radiologic Sciences, etc.)
Technical experience in design, engineering OR general knowledge in anatomy/biology
Strong organizational skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams
Eagerness to learn new concepts and have new experiences

Location: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, PHL Campus – Hybrid Negotiable
Duration: 20 hours per week for 10-12 weeks
typically running early June - first week of August, exact dates flexible
Compensation: Stipend as defined by current CHOP NTP policy
