Graduate Assistant, First Year Programs - Emerging Leaders Program

First Year Programs

The Department for Student Transition and Success is seeking an organized, positive, and student-centered candidate to assist with First Year Programs, specifically the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP). The ELP is a fall-semester leadership development program for incoming students that emphasizes collaboration, service-learning, and networking. The Graduate Assistant (GA) will report to the Asst. Director and Coordinator for First Year Success and is expected to work 20 hours a week.

The GA will gain experience selecting, training, and supervising student staff; facilitating individual and team meetings; planning events; managing and assessing programs; communicating with a variety of university/community stakeholders; and supporting students in their overall first semester development.

The GA will provide support in:

●     Supervision

●     Facilitation

●     Event planning

●     Program management

●     Assessment

●     Communication across program stakeholders

●     Student development

Anticipated educational outcomes include direct experience with developing and implementing multi-faceted student development initiatives; coordinating and facilitating presentations for individuals and groups; developing advising and supervision skills; applying student development and leadership theory to practice; creating and facilitating assessment tools; and practicing management of various student affairs functional areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

●     Assist with the development, implementation, and assessment of the Emerging Leaders Program, which includes:

○     Selecting student staff

○     Training staff and facilitating the weekly mentor class 

○     Supervising and supporting student staff through individual and team meetings

○     Managing the program’s social media

○     Planning and facilitating program-wide events

○     Organizing and assessing the LEAD workshop series, including facilitation of some workshops

○     Assessing ELP and student learning outcomes 

○     Keeping track of student progress through the program

○     Communicating frequently with all stakeholders (students, mentors, Program Assistants, advisors, community partners, campus partners, etc.)

Other programmatic duties as they arise during the course of the academic year to assist with furthering the mission of First Year Student Success initiatives and/or Speaking Center initiatives


 

Compensation:

This position pays an hourly rate of $20/hr. This is an in-person position and an average of 20 hours of work per week is expected.
