Woodworking Specialist
About the Role
At Camp Echo Lake, our Woodshop is more than just a place to build birdhouses; it is a hub of creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor development. As a Woodworking Specialist, you will manage a fully equipped shop, teaching campers (ages 7-16) how to transform raw materials into functional art and personal projects.
This role is a perfect fit for students majoring in Furniture Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Art Education, or Studio Arts.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruction: Teach campers the fundamentals of woodworking, including measuring, sanding, assembly, and the safe use of hand tools and basic power tools.
- Project Design: Develop a curriculum of age-appropriate projects ranging from simple wooden toys to complex furniture pieces or collaborative camp installations.
- Safety Supervision: Act as the primary safety officer in the shop, ensuring all campers follow strict safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized workspace.
- Mentorship: Help campers navigate the frustration of a "mistake" and turn it into a creative solution, fostering confidence and patience.
- Shop Management: Manage lumber inventory, maintain tools (sharpening, cleaning, basic repairs), and ensure the shop is "show-ready" every day.
Handshake Candidate Requirements
- Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated experience with woodworking hand tools and power tools (e.g., miter saws, drill presses, orbital sanders).
- Portfolio/Experience: A background in carpentry, furniture making, or shop-based arts is highly preferred.
- Teaching Mindset: Ability to break down complex tasks into simple, safe steps for children with varying skill levels.
- Responsibility: A safety-first mentality is non-negotiable. You must be observant and proactive in managing a high-risk environment.
The "Echo Lake" Edge
- Creative Freedom: You have a significant say in what projects are built. If you have a passion for a specific technique, you can bring it to the program.
- Professional Growth: Develop leadership and instructional skills that are invaluable for future roles in education, project management, or design.
- Total Summer Immersion: Live, work, and play in the Adirondacks. Your room, board, and laundry are all covered, allowing you to save your entire summer stipend.
- Global Community: Work alongside 200+ staff members from across the globe, building a professional network that spans industries and continents.
