Community Engagement Intern (Summer 2026)

Summary
The City of Batavia is seeking an enthusiastic and community-minded Community Engagement Intern to support public communications and outreach efforts during Summer 2026. This paid internship offers a hands-on opportunity for upper-division undergraduate or graduate students to learn how municipal services, infrastructure, and public safety operations function and how those stories are shared with the community. The position is paid at $20 per hour, with a flexible schedule and internship duration to accommodate academic commitments. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for community events, with advance notice.

Duties
The intern will assist with creating engaging content for social media and other public-facing platforms; supporting community events, festivals, and outreach activities; helping explain City projects and services in clear, accessible ways; and providing general communications and administrative support to the Communications and Administration team. Work may include on-site content capture, event support, research, and coordination of engagement activities.

Qualifications
Applicants should be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program in communications, marketing, journalism, public administration, public relations, digital media, or a related field, or possess an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong communication skills, creativity, curiosity, professionalism, and an interest in civic engagement are essential. Experience with content creation, social media, events, or digital tools is preferred but not required. A valid Illinois driver’s license is required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to communicate clearly and positively with residents and staff; translate complex or technical information into engaging content; work independently while collaborating as part of a team; manage multiple tasks; and maintain discretion when working with internal or sensitive information.

Work Conditions
Work is performed in office, field, and community settings and may involve light physical activity, travel to City facilities, and occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
