Summary:
This position assists staff Aquarists with the daily husbandry responsibilities of New England Aquarium’s Yawkey Coral Reef Center. This gallery focuses on habitats and species native to the Caribbean, including animals such as coral, dwarf seahorses, and garden eels. Interns in this role will have the opportunity to learn more about the care for tropical fish and invertebrate species, maintaining aquarium systems and other routine duties related to animal care.

Department Description:
The Yawkey Coral Reef Gallery staff support the New England Aquarium’s mission to protect the blue planet by creating and maintaining exhibits that encourage the public to care about the ocean and to become involved in conservation.
Time Commitment:
Spring, Summer, Fall: 12-16 Weeks. At least Two Full Days Per Week (8:00 am-5:00 pm)
Winter: 125 hours minimum
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Assist with daily husbandry functions including the maintenance of living exhibits, holding, and life support systems
Assist with monitoring water parameters for associated systems
Diet preparation and feeding for living collection
Daily assessment of animal welfare
Daily organization and upkeep for associated behind-the-scene space(s)
Record keeping in regulation to protocols set forth by NEAq
Assist with husbandry maintenance for this gallery’s coral propagation system
Assist with the culture of plankton
Assist staff with on-going projects throughout the gallery
Potential to assist in other areas including: Tropical, Temperate, Northern Waters, and Freshwater
Attend two professional development lunches with the Volunteer Programs and Internships office
Skills/Qualifications:
Must have strong interest in Biology or Marine Science
The position requires physical labor. Applicant must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to climb multiple flights of stairs
Must be able to take in and carry out multiple instructions and execute them in a timely manner
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
Must be comfortable working with animal food items, including raw seafood
Work in confined spaces of varying temperatures, light, and sound levels
