Reporting Intern
J-CORPS INTERNSHIP: Reporting Intern at Borderless Magazine: We are seeking a reporting intern for the summer who is passionate about immigration issues and is ready to dive into reporting.
The reporting intern will be responsible for reporting a variety of stories, including profiles of immigrant leaders and business owners, first-person interviews, feature stories and explainers. They will leave the internship with highly marketable skills in engagement and service journalism and a strong portfolio of stories.
The reporting intern must have a means of traveling to assignments, whether it’s their own vehicle or public transportation. Personal protective equipment, such as masks, will be provided should they need it.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Interview, report and write 1-2 stories per week
- Pitch story ideas
- Attend and contribute to team meetings
- Work with our editorial team to both find new story ideas and bring our stories to a wider audience
Our ideal candidate will:
- Be eager to report impactful, community-centered stories on the environment, legal and social justice issues impacting Midwestern immigrant communities
- Have a strong ability to work both individually and collaboratively with the rest of the staff, communicate status updates, and make any requested changes in a timely manner
- Have Spanish fluency
Media companies commit to pay interns at least $17/hr for a minimum of 280 hours (commonly scheduled over 8 weeks at 35 hours per week) between late May/early June and the third week of August.
Approximate start date: June 1 (flexible start date and term is 7 or 8 weeks)
