JOB TITLE: Educational Interpreter for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing
CLASSIFICATION: Professional
REPORTS TO: Coordinator of DHH Programs and Services

TERMS:
This position is a 201 total paid days position offering full family medical, dental, and vision benefits. Dental, vision, and life insurance are paid by the district at no cost to the employee. Personal business days and sick time paid. Retirement through the Office of Retirement Services (Pension Plus or Defined Contribution). Negotiated long term disability is paid by the district up to $30 per month.
SALARY RANGE:
This full time, direct hire position is on the Centerbased Professional Scale, $56,779.00-86,480.00 per year on the Bachelor’s lane. Lanes available for BA+20, MA, MA+30, and MA+60/PHD.
GENERAL JOB FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, educational interpreters act as facilitators of communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and non-signing members of the school community.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Support the implementation of student’s IEP.
- Use the appropriate modality and language.
- Interpret at the appropriate language level of a student.
- Clearly convey all aspects of meaning and content.
- Make sure the goal if the lesson is clear.
- Make appropriate use of fingerspelling.
- Facilitate and support participation and social communication.
- Monitor student comprehension.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A qualified interpreter certification as defined in the Michigan Compiled Laws and known as the Deaf Persons’ Interpreter Act who has been approved at EIPA Level, BEI Level or NIC.
2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities.
NOTABLE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Occasional lifting of light to moderately heavy equipment is required. The ability to move freely about the classroom is also a common requirement.
TYPICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Most work is done in a therapy room or classroom environment.
EVALUATION:
Employees in this classification are evaluated according to Board policy.
OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT:
There are no opportunities for advancement within this classification.
WORK LOCATION(S):
Most work is performed in the classrooms and community-based locations.
TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS:
Frequent travel in the area is required. Some travel is necessary within the state for conferences, meetings, etc.
