Applications Support Specialist

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

The Applications Support Specialist will perform applications support tasks with guidance from the application development team to analyze, test, document, and support software associated with campus administrative information systems. In addition to supporting existing customized software applications, the position will be responsible for supporting configuration and integration with an expanding portfolio of third-party applications, specifically Slate CRM, Axiom elite data integration platform, Degree Works, College Scheduler, Maxient and Who's Next.

A successful candidate will be able to work on a highly collaborative technical team to solve problems and provide excellent support to the college community with the guidance of the Applications and Integrations team.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Individual Responsibilities:

  1. Provide initial helpdesk response and coordination of escalation for all Applications & Integration incident, change, research and training requests.
  2. Perform tasks supporting the Banner student information system and other campus management information systems
  3. Support college stakeholders with administrative use of applications.
  4. Support the testing and post upgrade processes for upgrades and patches with ITEC and SICAS.
  5. Assist with the design, development, testing, documentation, and support of database applications that provide business workflows, transactional maintenance, and data integration with third party applications
  6. Assist the development of custom reporting and analytics
  7. Assist Applications developer with configuration, testing, and support for third party product modules.
  8. Interface with third party product support resources to resolve problems such as ITEC, SICAS and Ellucian Action Line when appropriate.
  9. Complete project tasks as assigned by the Director of Applications and Integrations in collaboration with the applications team.

B. General Requirements and Teams:

  1. Perform incidental duties associated with day-to-day functions of the offices of Information Technology Services (ITS), most of which entail front-line interaction with campus computer users, in person or remotely. These tasks will occasionally include [but are not limited to] resolving computing problems for end users, communicating solutions, following up on open tickets, monitoring support chat and covering staff absences.
  2. Contribute to the publication of technical and informational newsletters, electronic communications, bulletins, and ITS web pages where appropriate.
  3. Contribute to instruction of training courses for campus computing users and staff where appropriate. Attend training seminars and business meetings to extend specialized skills for staff and project management as approved by the CIO.
  4. Explore emerging technologies in computing and applications software through readings in professional journals and product documentation.
  5. All other duties as assigned.

 


Requirements:
 

EDUCATION

A minimum of an associate's degree required. Degrees in Computing or Information Technology preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 1 year analysis, programming, and/or application support experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience producing or modifying functional deliverables (APIs, automations, tool development, experience cards, Degree Works scribe, etc) in Banner or another ERP/SIS environment.
  • Experience working as an IT applications specialist in the SUNY system is desired but not required.
  • Practical experience leveraging SQL & PL/SQL in modern relational databases to assist users, resolve application errors, and ensure data accuracy across supported systems.
  • Practical experience leveraging Linux/Unix operating system tools to troubleshoot performance issues, analyze logs, and partner with cross?functional teams to ensure reliable application operations.
  • Documented experience navigating and supporting platforms like Banner and Brightspace, applying analytical skills to identify root causes, assist users, and work with stakeholders to improve system functionality.
  • Experience with analytical reporting tools such as PowerBI

  • Experience supporting object-oriented programming language(s) such as Java, Groovy, PHP

  • Availability to work evenings, weekends and civic holidays on an occasional basis to support critical issues and project upgrades

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience supporting web-based applications HTML/CSS/JavaScript web-based user interfaces
  • Experience or coursework related to reporting writing tools such as evisions Argos and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple teams; ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of campus and department mission
  • Demonstrated ability to function at a high-level in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation; demonstrated ability to be approachable, customer focused, adaptable, and patient.

 


Additional Information:
 

RELATIONSHIPS:

The Applications Support Specialist reports to the Director of Applications and Integrations and works with other ITS staff in performing maintenance operations. 

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a year-round appointment. Salary, benefits, and conditions of employment are as set by the GEA contract.  Evening and weekend hours may be required. Compensation is set at $61,721.71 - $70,384.41 based on qualifications and experience.  This position may include the opportunity to work partially or fully remote to meet the business needs of the college.
