High Rocks Summer Internship
A group of four to six interns complete a ten-week internship at
High Rocks Education Corporation from June 3, 2026 to August 5, 2026. The internship has two main components – seminars and hands-on experience
working with young people in summer camps. The majority of the service is hands-on, hearts-on work with youth.
Camps are the heart of High Rocks. Members serve as mentors, role models, and teachers during the two camps: New Beginnings for 7th grade girls and Camp Steele for 8th-12th graders. Before camp, you will receive training, help prepare the campground, and help plan classes. During camp they are paired with a master teacher to assist in a class that teaches diverse subject areas such as math, science, creative expressions, dramatic debate, horses, etc . You may also help coordinate camp logistics or help in the kitchen. At the end of the day you will get to enjoy campfires, skits, hikes, stargazing, and ultimate Frisbee in the field!
As part of the experience, each member designs and presents an individual project to connect their previous expertise and academic interests with what they've learned at High Rocks. Members will work with staff to develop a project proposal and present the completed project during Camp Steele.
Housing is provided. Members should be comfortable with the idea of living in a tight-knit community and sharing space with a group. This is a unique experience in the heart of Appalachia that will help you grow as a leader, a thinker, and a doer. Our internships are physically, intellectually, and mentally rigorous but also extremely rewarding.
