Role Overview
EnKoat is seeking a motivated Materials Characterization Intern to support its growing R&D efforts. In this role, you will work directly with EnKoat’s R&D team under the supervision of the company’s Material Innovation Scientist, contributing to the characterization, testing, and optimization of advanced coating materials.
This is a hands-on, in-person role based in EnKoat’s laboratory facilities in Tempe, Arizona, offering exposure to real-world product development in a fast-paced startup environment.
Your Responsibilities
- Prepare samples and materials from R&D and pilot-scale production efforts
- Operate analytical instruments and laboratory equipment to characterize optical, physical, chemical, and structural material properties
- Conduct and support ASTM and internal test protocols relevant to coating performance
- Assist in developing, refining, and documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Support maintenance, calibration, and preventative care of laboratory instruments and metrology tools
- Process, analyze, and interpret experimental data to assess material quality, consistency, and performance
- Document results in clear technical reports and presentations
- Collaborate across R&D, product development, and field teams with an open and curious mindset

Minimum Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a closely related field
- 1–2 years of experience working in a scientific or engineering laboratory environment
- Ability to work in person at EnKoat’s Tempe lab
- Basic data analysis skills and ability to identify trends
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to lift and carry materials up to 30 lbs
- Strong organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s student or recent graduate in Chemistry, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sustainability, or a related field
- Experience with ASTM testing procedures and standards
- Familiarity with material safety data sheets (SDS) and lab safety protocols
- Experience maintaining laboratory instruments or process equipment
- Strong data analysis and technical documentation skills
- Exposure to polymer science or manufacturing environments (nice to have)
