Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM

Morning Session: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM

Afternoon Session: 1:00 PM–4:00 PM
Compensation: Hourly, Pasadena minimum wage

Position Overview

Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI) is seeking motivated undergraduate and early graduate-level students to serve as Paid STEM Teaching Assistants (TAs) for its Summer High School STEM Program.

Teaching Assistants will work closely with a STEM instructor/teacher to support classroom and laboratory instruction for high school students enrolled in HMRI’s summer program. In addition to assisting with instruction, TAs serve as mentors, help supervise laboratory activities, and provide guidance to students as they are introduced to foundational biomedical research concepts and techniques.

This is a paid, full-time, in-person position designed for individuals interested in education, mentorship, and STEM workforce development.

Key Responsibilities

Assist the lead STEM instructor with classroom and laboratory instruction

Support hands-on laboratory activities and demonstrations

Supervise and mentor high school students during instructional sessions

Help students understand research methods, laboratory techniques, and scientific concepts

Ensure a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment

Assist with preparation of lab materials and instructional activities

Support student research projects and final symposium presentations

Curriculum & Weekly Program Focus

Teaching Assistants will support instruction across the following weekly themes:

Week 0 (June 8–12): TA training and curriculum preparation

Week 1: Research Methods and Instrumentation

Week 2: Anatomy (Brain, Heart, Lungs)

Week 3: Pathology and Radiology

Week 4: Genetics

Week 5: Bioinformatics and Environmental Science

Week 6: Research Projects and Student Symposium

Recommended Experience

Applicants with experience or coursework in the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

Research methods and scientific instrumentation

Wet lab techniques

Anatomy of the brain, heart, and lungs

Pathology and radiology

Genetics

Environmental science
Laboratory experience is highly recommended.

Eligibility Requirements

Must be over 18 years of age

Must be either:

A current undergraduate student enrolled in an academic program, or

A prospective Fall 2026 first-year graduate student (post-bacc, MS, or PhD; enrolled or accepted)

Must be available to work on-site in Pasadena for the full duration of the program

Must be able to commit to the full daily schedule (9:00 AM–4:00 PM)
