Museum Visitor Engagement & Education Intern
Position Summary
This internship will provide the intern with a beneficial learning experience while they gain practical experience in the daily operations of a nonprofit museum. In this position, the intern will be regularly interacting with members of the public including: museum visitors, tourist groups, field trip groups, volunteers, and educators. By working at the Museum’s front desk/museum store, in the Museum’s collection, and out in the community, the intern will participate in a variety of museum activities, receiving practical museum experience.
This is a full-time internship requiring 40 hours per week with some weekends. The overall length of the internship is open to discussion, but typically lasts between 7-12 weeks, 10 weeks on average. We request that you come into your interview with an understanding of when you can start and end your internship with us. WMM does NOT provide housing for this internship, the intern is expected to figure out their own living arrangements.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Provide positive experiences to Museum guests at the front desk, museum store, galleries, and public events.
- Study and learn provided materials about the museum, the submarine (USS Cobia), and the Manitowoc North Breakwater Lighthouse in order to provide tours and answer questions for visitors.
- Give engaging and informative tours of the submarine, USS Cobia, the lighthouse, and the galleries for field trip and bus tour groups.
- Be comfortable and confident in your ability to open and close the museum as well as the submarine. This includes using our alarm system to arm and disarm the museum and submarine.
- Provide assistance where needed, such as in the preparation and set up for Museum programs. As well as working museum programs, especially our larger scale ones such as SubFest.
- Comfortable with handling money and the ability to make change for the customers.
