Overview
Museum Collections and institutional archival history are vital resources to Science Museum staff, external researchers and historians, and education professionals. Digitization of such resources improves accessibility, collaboration, searchability, educational outreach, and research potential. The Science Museum seeks an intern who will assist the Museum in expanding its digitization efforts.
Job Description
Under the supervision of the Administrative Supervisor, the intern will use a combination of digitization tools which may include optical character recognition (OCR) scanners, EinScan-SE 3D Scanner, and DSLR cameras and lightboxes to digitally capture and preserve archival papers, photographic slides and negatives, and small to medium-sized collection objects. At the end of the program, the intern shall produce a meaningful document and presentation to inform Museum staff of the digitized documents and how they are associated with the history of the Science Museum of Virginia and Broad Street Station.
All Summer Interns will gain exposure and an insider view of a wide cross-section of museum career opportunities and develop leadership skills as well as hands-on project experience. Internship activities will include meetings with Museum senior leaders, direct work experience, professional development, participation in breakfast club presentations on science and the Museum field, and networking opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Interns must be at least 18 years of age and be enrolled as college undergraduates or graduate students
- First generation college students are encouraged to apply
- Desire to expand access to primary source materials
- Strong attention to detail, solutions oriented, and highly organized
- Excellent communication both oral and written skills
- Demonstrate maturity, common sense, flexibility, and reliability
- Ability to work work well independently and as part of a team,and meet established deadlines while following the supervisor’s instructions and guidance
- Demonstrates the ability to accept constructive criticism and feedback positively, using it to improve performance throughout the internship
- Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
Additional Considerations
- Experience with database management
- Experience with Adobe products
Commitment
- This is a paid internship position
- Interns will be expected to complete 300 hours between Mid-May and Mid-August
- Interns will be paid at an hourly rate of $15/hr
- Candidates selected for interviews should be prepared to discuss their general summer availability
- If receiving school credit, candidates should specify their academic program and required hours
- Interns must commit to participating in all required training sessions
- The selected candidate must pass a criminal background check
