Staffing Specialist

University of Michigan Health-West (Formally Metro Health) is looking for Staffing Specialist - Emergency Department

The Staffing Specialist is responsible for the coordination and implementation of staff schedules within their department/unit. This individual works independently to prioritize tasks and utilizes a high degree of confidentiality.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Associates degree preferred
  • Certification in Clinical Staffing and Scheduling preferred
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred
  • Strong organizational skills in an office environment
  • Excellent computer skills utilizing Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and e-mail
  • Positive interpersonal skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to analyze complex reports
  • Ability to use good judgment

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrates a positive attitude and customer service skills when communicating with staff members, and Department leadership.
  2. Works collaboratively with staff members and Department leadership to achieve optimal staffing levels.
  3. Maintains open and ongoing communications and effective working relationships with staff on all shifts and with Department leadership.
  4. Fills staffing vacancies caused by PTO and unscheduled time off; reviews internal timecard system queues for employee requests to work.
  5. Assess daily needs and contact staff to fill holes in the schedule.
  6. Organizes and continually updates changes made on the schedule and worksheets.
  7. Maintain schedules according to organizational and department specific policies.
  8. Maintains knowledge of individual staff skill/experience to provide adequate numbers of staffing resources including cross-training/orientation to multiple units.
  9. Creates and manages the orientation calendars for new employees.
  10. Utilizes AIDET when communicating with patients, visitors, physicians, peers, managers, volunteers, internal and external customers.
  11. Assists Department leadership in maintaining staffing budget and productivity reports, as needed.
  12. Collaborates with Human Resources and Department leadership to coordinate Leave of Absences, as needed.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.

Staffing Specialist - Emergency Department * Days - 36 hours/week
Monday-Friday, 8-hour shifts, with one day being a 4-hour shift.
