LHSI Intern: IU Indianapolis ECHO Center
Program Summary
This internship is offered as a part of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI). This program connects 125 IU Indianapolis undergraduates per year with internships on campus with faculty and staff in a variety of health and science related campus areas/programs. All LHSI internships start in August 2026 and end in May 2027 and are paid $14/hour for up to 10 hours per week. Work-study is accepted but not required.

Overview of the Internship Site: Join the IU Indianapolis ECHO Center at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health to work directly with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, pharmacists, advanced practice providers, social workers, and public health leaders.
This internship is designed for students who want meaningful, flexible, and impact-driven experience in public health and health systems work.
At our Center, interns are not just observers—they are active contributors. You’ll work closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, pharmacists, social workers, peer educators, and public health professionals. We prioritize mentorship, flexibility, and helping students connect their interests to real projects that matter to communities across Indiana.
Because our work is constantly evolving, this internship is especially well-suited for students who are curious, adaptable, and eager to explore different areas of public health.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Intern responsibilities are flexible and can be tailored to align with your academic interests, skills, and career goals. Typical duties may include:
- Supporting live Project ECHO training sessions, including session setup, coordinating logistics, participant engagement, and follow-up using Zoom and related platforms
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary healthcare and public health teams to support the implementation of multiple ECHO programs with a variety of topics that are priority health issues in Indiana and the U.S., such as infectious disease, cancer prevention, pain management, peer support work, correctional health, and more.
- Managing and organizing programmatic data, including data entry, basic analysis, and preparation of summaries used for evaluation and continuous quality improvement
- Assisting with monitoring and evaluation efforts, gaining hands-on experience with how public health programs measure outcomes and impact
- Helping develop communications and outreach materials, such as e-blasts, summaries, or updates shared with community partners and stakeholders
- Participating in regular professional meetings, learning how public health programs are planned, adapted, and sustained
- Assisting with conference abstracts, posters, reports, or presentations, with opportunities to help share work at professional or academic meetings
- Interns are encouraged to suggest ideas, explore new initiatives, and help shape projects
- Scheduling is flexible within regular work hours to support academic and personal commitments
- Interns receive mentorship and guidance from experienced public health professionals
- Multilingual students are strongly encouraged to apply. Language skills are a plus, and multilingual interns may assist with special projects related to outreach, accessibility, or community engagement
Work Environment and Dress Code: The work is performed in an hybrid format with most days in the office and remote options available. Dress code is business casual.
Hours per week: flexible based on student needs (10 maximum), scheduling is flexible within regular work hour
Project-specific qualifications:
We are looking for students who are curious, engaged, and excited to learn through hands-on experience. Responsibilities can be customized based on your interests and career goals.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
- An interest in public health, health systems, or community-based work, particularly as it relates to improving access to care and health outcomes in Indiana
- An openness to exploring new ideas, evolving projects, and emerging public health priorities, with the flexibility to adapt as programs grow and change
- Interest in working both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary professional team
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to balance multiple tasks across different projects
- Clear, timely, and professional written and verbal communication skills
- A willingness to take initiative, offer ideas, and actively contribute to projects rather than simply observing
- Comfort learning new tools and technologies (such as Zoom and shared data or communication platforms) with guidance and support
- Respect for different perspectives and a commitment to working with communities across varied backgrounds and experiences
No prior public health experience is required—this internship is designed to support learning and growth. Students from all majors and academic backgrounds who are motivated to engage in meaningful, real-world work are encouraged to apply.
By the end of the LHSI program, you will:

LHSI Qualifications
· must be graduating May 2028 or after (usually a current freshman or sophomore in Spring 2026)
Current full time IU Indianapolis undergraduate in 2026-27
· minimum overall GPA of 2.0
· All majors welcome
