Summer Camp Counselor
Position Summary
Camp Counselors prepare lesson plans and lead activities, games, and crafts for SSC’s Environmental Day Camp program for children, age 4 through grade 5. Experiential lessons take place in the diverse habitats of Odiorne Point State Park and are reinforced utilizing SSC’s interactive and live-animal exhibits. Camp Counselors must have taken college-level environmental and/or education course work and have a strong interest in coastal ecology. Experience teaching outdoors with children ages 4-12 preferred. Familiarity with marine and coastal ecosystems is helpful. Camp Counselors must follow and help enforce all health and safety guidelines.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare lesson plans and lead hands-on activities, games and crafts for children in grades Pre-K-5th, based on the weekly camp themes.
- Incorporate the Center’s interactive exhibits and the trails and habitats of Odiorne Point State Park into lessons, including time on the rocky shore.
- Take daily attendance of campers in age groups, and report absentees to the Camp Director.
- Maintain and carry First Aid Kit and radio, carrying Epi-pens and/or inhalers as necessary.
- Maintain the safety of the campers, both inside and outside the building, by adhering to, and reminding campers of, the Camp Rules.
- Provide adequate time for camper bathroom breaks, hydration, and sunscreen and bug spray application.
- Provide adequate time for camper snack and lunch, notify the Director if the camper has no food, or is not eating.
- Notify Director of any emergency immediately
Qualifications and Experience
- Camp Counselors must have taken college-level environmental and/or education course work and have a strong interest in coastal ecology.
- Experience teaching outdoors with children ages 4-12 preferred.
- Familiarity with marine and coastal ecosystems is helpful.
- Must successfully complete and clear all background checks.
Physical Requirements:
- Must possess the ability to provide care in the outdoors, including on the rocky shore and other potentially rough habitats.
- Must be able to climb rocks, stairs, and occasionally lift moderately heavy objects.
