Recreation Program Director

The Recreation Program Director, with assistance from the Library Director and other Town staff, develops, implements and evaluates all recreational activities for the community of La Pointe on Madeline Island. Seasonally Supports Town administration with various tasks.

 

The Recreation Program Director must ensure the overall health and safety of all participants while they participate in recreational activities that are primarily focused outdoors.

This description is not intended to limit or modify the right of any supervisor to assign, direct, and control the work of employees under supervision.  The Library Board and Town Board retains and reserves any and/or all rights to change, modify, amend, add to or delete, from any section of this document as it deems, in its judgment, to be proper.

 

 I.  DUTIES:

  • Organize year round recreational activities utilizing the Madeline Island Public Library recreation Equipment Libraries including but not limited to: kayaking, paddle boarding, XC skiing, ice skating, fishing, hiking, softball, skateboarding, snow shoeing, hiking, foraging, ( ***possible, manage ice rink and skatepark)

 

  • Seasonal Job Duty Shift:
  • Oversee and work seasonally in the Youth Summer Recreation Program June-August 35 + hours per week
  • October-May 10 hours per week in Library, 5 hours per week in programming, 20 hours Townhall Administrative assistant.  (This is a rough estimate as time division will be based on tasks and programming)

 

  • In conjunction with the Library Director interview and hire seasonal recreational staff.

 

  • Manage and Maintain Recreation Libraries to ensure equipment is in working order. Keep inventory in good condition, provide maintenance and repair needs. Collect and procure learning materials that support programming such as field guides, maps, and trail guides.

 

  • Work closely with Library Director on grant opportunities and fundraising needs to support programming
  • Work closely with the Town administrator on seasonal job responsibilities

 

  • Record, Evaluate and maintain participation numbers and data for annual reporting.
  • Hold regular Library office hours and be cross trained at the reference desk. Serve as an o/c employee when other Library staff is utilizing PTO.

 

 

A.   PLANNING

 

Responsible for planning weekly or biweekly recreation activities that are seasonally driven and age focused 0-99 years. Focus on place based activities highlighting the natural parks, places and trails located on Madeline Island and the Bay area.

Organize, plan and implement the Youth Summer Recreation program mid June through mid August.

Organize field trips to Mt. Ashwabay for youth and adults January-March

Participate in and organize shoulder season activities and plan for the Winter and summer month activities.

 

B.  SCHEDULING

        

Provide patrons and public with a monthly schedule of activities and clearly communicate the sign-up, location, and waivers needed. Post on the Libraries Social Media to promote and document activities. Ensure that all age groups are being accounted for with appropriate activities and skill levels.

 

C.  WORK SCHEDULE

 

Maintain 35 hours per week on average. Hold a minimum of 10 hours of office hours at the Library in the winter season (October- May). Work daily with the youth Summer Recreation program mid June- Mid August. Event based schedule and prep time in the shoulder seasons.  Schedule and Paid time off to be organized with the Library Director/Town Administrator.

 

 

D.  RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Model and educate  appropriate behavior and skills for every activity.

 

  • Be available to participants and respond to their needs and concerns.

 

  • Implement and maintain a participant registration system including parent/supervisor contract, medical information for the participant, parent/supervisor name and signature, address, phone number and emergency contact information.  All original forms for each participant shall be kept on file in the Library.
  •  Invoice for all paid programming communicate to Library Director billing needs and follow up.
  • Maintain an accurate daily attendance list.

 

  • Maintain and inventory a stock of needed supplies, including but not limited to, cleaning supplies, first aid, games and equipment.  Order additional supplies as needed and as budgeted.  

 

  • Submit a written report to the Library Director at the end of each month.  The report should include number of participants per day, examples of activities attendees engaged in, number of volunteers and what they volunteered to do, any problems encountered, and any other comments the Director may have. Utilize any new analytics that are implemented to track programming.

 

  • Maintain the safety and well being of all program participants at all of the programming locations.

 

  • Use corrective steps to prevent, eliminate, and deal with discipline in an appropriate way. Communicate with the Library Director, parents/supervisors where appropriate regarding behavior or discipline issues encountered as needed. Fill out incident waivers and maintain them in physical and digital forms.

 

  • Inventory recreation supplies and equipment.

 

  • Other responsibilities/maintenance as assigned by the Library Director.

 

II. QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Must be age 18 or older and possess a high school diploma or GED. Post secondary education is preferred but not necessary.

 

  • Experience working with groups of youth, preteens, young adults and elders.

 

  • Experience with creating and implementing recreational activities.

 

  • Proven ability to interact with all participants in a supportive, safe and encouraging way.

 

  • Ability to work as a member of a team.

 

  • Ability to pass a criminal history check.

 

  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification required.

 

  • Lifeguard Certification required.

 

COMPENSATION: Starting Compensation $24/hour.Based on a 35/hr week. Full Benefits package includes, health Insurance, WRS- State Retirement Plan, Flex Account, Vacation and Paid Holidays.
