Recreation Leader I

General Description

This position is responsible for providing support to all recreation and leisure services, facilities, and programs. This position is responsible for performing a variety of duties for the Town's recreation and leisure services including organizing and assisting in athletic programs, instructional programs, seasonal camps, youth activities and other special community events. Responsible for recreational facilities and equipment including set up. Lead and instruct program participants of all ages, assist program instructors, counselors, and volunteers. Perform a variety of administrative duties related to day-to-day operation of the department. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other variable hours as necessary during special events and activities.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for providing support for all recreational programs, activities and events
  • Greet and assist patrons in-person at the front desk, over the phone and via email
  • Provide effective and courteous customer service to all patrons, respond to inquiries and greet the public in a courteous, helpful and tactful manner
  • Responsible for front desk operations including registering, checking-in participants, opening/closeout reports and posting payments accurately
  • Prepare facility for daily activities including setting up and breakdown program equipment
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing the facility including following procedures, cleanliness, and securing the facility
  • Ensure all cash, check and credit receipts, reporting, auditing, and posting of program, concession and all other monies are entered accurately and in a timely manner
  • Assist with youth and adult activities, special events and rentals assuming responsibility for delegated tasks
  • Maintains communication with patrons and staff, forwards all messages to appropriate parties
  • Enforce safety rules, monitor participant behavior, identify potential hazards and administer basic first aid as needed 
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of, and adhere to all, established department and Town policies and procedures
  • Perform other job-related duties as necessary and consistent with the position

  • Knowledge of the needs of the community with respect to recreation
  • Knowledge of public recreation principles, practices and programs
  • Ability to resolve minor conflicts among program participants with firmness, tact, and respect
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, Town officials and the public
  • Talent for creative problem solving 
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing

Physical Requirements

  • Must frequently lift and/or move more than thirty (30) pounds and occasionally assist in lifting and/or moving more than fifty (50) pounds
  • Required to move; stand, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and sit
  • Acceptable vision abilities required with or without correction     
  • Ability to hear normal conversational speech and the ability to distinguish between different sounds in a noisy environment
