Civil Engineer

The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are developing technology to increase tunneling speed and reduce costs by a factor of 10 or more - with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions. Our tunnels have transported over 3 million people to date, and we've recently expanded into our second city, Nashville.

To support this rapid growth, we are seeking a motivated Civil Engineer with experience in land development, site design, utilities mapping, or subsurface infrastructure. Tunneling experience is not required; success in this role comes from strong technical fundamentals, a willingness to take initiative, and the ability to support complex field and design operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing and updating civil design plans, drawings, reports, and technical exhibits using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Support the integration of survey data, legal descriptions, aerial imagery, and utility records into engineering plans with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Participate in the digitization and organization of as-built civil, utility, and structural drawings; help maintain consistent QA processes.
  • Conduct field investigations, site surveys, utility mapping, subsurface data collection, and document findings.
  • Support survey measurements, boundary verification, and alignment checks for field operations and guidance systems.
  • Help monitor and maintain survey equipment inventory, calibration schedules, and readiness across jobsites.
  • Prepare progress updates and assist with reporting for leadership and project teams.
  • Collaborate closely with senior engineers, field teams, and contractors to ensure smooth project execution.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • 1–5 years of experience in civil engineering, surveying, site development, utilities, or related work.
  • Hands-on experience with field operations, surveying, or construction environments.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD; familiarity with Civil 3D a plus.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with engineering teams and field technicians.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to learn in a fast-paced, technical environment.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized, and proactive.

Additional Requirements

  • Position may require extended hours and occasional weekend work.
  • Able to travel for short trips as needed (up to ~20%).
  • Comfortable working outdoors and in confined spaces.
