ternship Title: Development and Communications Intern

Program Duration: 12-months

Location: Bellevue, WA (on-site opportunity)

Mentorship Department(s): Marketing & Development

Time Commitment: 36 to 46 hours per week (Typically Mon-Fri 8 AM to 4:30 PM)

Stipend: $3,250/month

Travel: Occasional travel may be required - including weekends and overnight stays
 

About Binaytara 

Binaytara is a leading global oncology nonprofit, dedicated to reducing cancer health disparities around the world. Our mission is to improve access to cancer care, enhance continuing medical education, and foster implementation science research in hematology and oncology, thereby reducing the global burden of cancer. As the largest cancer conference organizer in the US, we impact thousands of doctors and oncology/hematology practitioners who attend our conferences to stay current on cutting-edge treatments for their patients. As a leader in global oncology, we have partnered with local government and health organizations in Nepal to operate the only cancer hospital in Madhesh Province, deliver cervical cancer screenings, provide nurse training and establish the first bone marrow transplant center in the country. In India, we have partnered with government institutions to establish a palliative care program in Madhya Pradesh. We are building a comprehensive 200-bed cancer center in Janakpur, Nepal that will dramatically improve access to cancer care in Nepal and surrounding communities.

Program Overview:

The Development & Communication Internship is a structured educational training program designed to provide recent college graduates with guided exposure to nonprofit development, communications, and marketing practices.

The internship emphasizes learning, mentorship, reflection, and skill development, while allowing interns to participate in supervised, real-world projects related to fundraising communications, digital media, and donor engagement. Interns participate as trainees, not employees, and all activities are conducted for the primary purpose of learning.

This internship does not constitute employment with Binaytara and is not designed as a pathway to employment with the organization.

Learning Focus Areas

Through mentored participation, the intern will gain exposure to:

  • Nonprofit development and fundraising communications
  • Ethical storytelling and health equity–focused messaging
  • Brand alignment and visual communication standards
  • Digital marketing tools and platforms
  • Cross-department collaboration in a nonprofit environment
  • Reflection, feedback, and professional growth practices

Educational & Project-Based Learning Activities

All activities are conducted with training, guidance, and review. Interns do not hold independent authority over campaigns, messaging strategy, donor relationships, or organizational communications.

I. Visual & Graphic Communications exposure

With training and mentorship, the intern may:

  • Practice creating graphic content using Canva and approved brand templates
  • Assist in drafting design materials such as emails, flyers, posters, reports, and digital assets
  • Review how brand guidelines are applied consistently across platforms

Learning focus: visual communication, branding, and audience awareness

II. Writing & Messaging for External Audiences 

As part of learning nonprofit communications, the intern may:

  • Draft written content for external audiences, including donor and healthcare stakeholders
  • Review how tone, clarity, and audience shape messaging
  • Receive feedback on writing to strengthen professional communication skills

Learning focus: written communication and ethical storytelling

III. Digital Marketing & Communications Systems Exposure 

With supervision, the intern will:

  • Evaluate how content is managed and published using marketing and communications software
  • Observe how email, web, and social media tools are used to support engagement
  • Practice working within existing systems without independent publishing authority

Learning focus: digital tools literacy and systems understanding

IV. Fundraising & Donor Engagement Communications Exposure 

For learning purposes, the intern may:

  • Assist with communications related to individual giving campaigns
  • Observe how donor engagement, cultivation, and stewardship are approached
  • Review how communications support broader development goals

V. Project & Data Management Exposure

As part of learning nonprofit operations, the intern may:

  • Assist in maintaining organized records and contact lists
  • Practice basic data organization, reporting, and reconciliation tasks under supervision
  • Relate how data supports communications and development decision-making

Learning focus: organization, accuracy, analysis, and systems thinking

VI. Collaboration & Mentorship

Throughout the internship, the intern will:

  • Collaborate with mentors and staff across departments
  • Describe how communications work intersects with development, programs, and events
  • Participate in mentor check-ins and structured learning conversations

VII. Reflection & Learning Documentation

To reinforce learning, the intern will:

  • Document learning reflections on a regular basis
  • Share feedback and questions with mentors
  • Participate in learning check-ins focused on growth, not output

Learning Progression

As skills and understanding develop, the complexity of learning activities may increase, always remaining supervised and instructional. Progression reflects educational growth and does not imply independent responsibility, authority, or staff-level accountability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree completed within the last 24 months in Communications, Marketing, Digital Media, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
  • Strong interest in nonprofit communications, fundraising, and health equity
  • Demonstrated writing and creative skills
  • Familiarity with digital tools such as Canva and email marketing platforms
  • Ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging content
  • Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and participate in mentorship
  • Interest in Binaytara’s mission to reduce cancer health disparities

Prior experience through coursework, internships, or volunteer roles is helpful but not required.

Program Commitment & Participation

  • Commitment to the full 12-month educational program
  • Participation in required learning activities and reflections
  • Regular engagement with mentors and program structure

Attendance expectations exist to support learning continuity and program integrity and are not employment requirements.

Interns receive a monthly stipend intended to support participation in the program. This stipend is not wages and does not confer employee status, benefits, or eligibility for employment protections.
