Public Programs Intern - El Museo del Barrio

Position Overview
El Museo del Barrio is seeking enthusiastic college interns for the Public Programs Department. This internship provides hands-on experience in museum programming, event planning, and community engagement. Interns will assist in planning and executing public events, family programs, and festivals, gaining insight into community relations through art and education. Responsibilities include researching talent, corresponding with artists and stakeholders, creating resource materials, attending meetings and trainings, responding to inquiries, and supporting program evaluations and implementation.


Key Responsibilities
• Assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of public programs and community events, including Super Sábado, Museum Mile, Uptown Bounce, and seasonal festivals.
• Support program logistics for artist talks, performances, family programs, and large-scale public events, including developing floor plans, signage, and program schedules; assisting with set-up, breakdown, and audience engagement support.
• Help prepare, organize, and maintain program materials, resources, and art-making supplies for public programs and workshops.
• Conduct research related to the Museum’s Permanent Collection and current 
exhibitions to support the development of exhibition-related public programs and interpretive content.
• Assist with researching artists, performers, speakers, and community partners, and support correspondence and coordination with invited participants and collaborators.
• Support communication with community partners, educators, artists, and program participants as needed, including responding to inquiries and assisting with outreach efforts.
• Assist with attendance tracking, data entry, evaluations, and basic reporting to 
support program assessment and audience engagement analysis.
• Participate in department meetings, curatorial walkthroughs, educator trainings, and planning sessions to gain insight into cross-departmental collaboration within a museum setting.
• Provide general administrative support to the Public Programs team, including scheduling assistance, document preparation, and database or file organization.
• Help maintain and organize the Education library, program archives, and art 
workshop spaces to ensure readiness for programs and staff use.
• Support inclusive, welcoming, and visitor-centered program environments that reflect the Museum’s commitment to access, equity, and community engagement.
 

Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in a college or university pursuing a degree in Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Education, Art History, Cultural Studies, or a related field.
• Strong interest in public programs, event planning, and community engagement.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) written and verbal skills (desired)
• Interest in Latine, Latin American, and Caribbean arts and culture.
