Vermont Innovation Summer 2026

This opportunity is part of Middlebury College’s Vermont Innovation Summer cohort program, sponsored by the Innovation Hub. This program supports students working with companies across Burlington’s innovation ecosystem. Vermont Innovation Summer internships will run from June 8—July 31, 2026. This position comes with access to affordable, fee-based dormitory housing through Champlain College in Burlington. More information will be available in March upon the intern’s offer of employment, however students will need to accept housing by April 1 in order to secure their spot. ELIGIBILITY: Interns must have at least a semester left at Middlebury following the conclusion of the internship to qualify. This position is not open to graduating seniors.

 

Position Title: Vermont Innovation Summer 2026: Generator Makerspace Intern

MISSION STATEMENT

Generator is a combination of business incubator, artist studios and classroom at the intersection of art, science, and technology. We provide the tools, expertise, education, and opportunity to enable all members of our community to create, collaborate, and bring ideas to fruition.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR IN AN INTERN?

Generator seeks a dynamic, organized self-starter eager and willing to learn the operational, technical, fabrication, and marketing skills required to run a makerspace and to support a maker community. This position is great for students interested in photography/videography, content creation, product design, engineering, community building, and working with youth through STEAM education. 

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Eager to learn, ask questions, and experience something new
  • Ability to prioritize projects based on the needs of a busy, creative environment
  • Willingness to learn how to operate a variety of tools including but not limited to 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, and vinyl cutters*
  • Interest in developing social media campaigns and other digital communications
  • Curious about mission-based work and willing to engage in community outreach 
  • Experience or interest in developing and delivering STEM/STEAM education
  • Shows initiative in identifying problems and developing effective solutions

 *Any specific tool skills/training needed to complete assigned projects will be provided by Generator staff during the internship.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Generator Interns will experience diverse, hands-on work that changes day-to-day. You'll contribute to meaningful projects across multiple areas, including co-facilitating creative learning activities, developing content for our social media channels, designing and fabricating projects for the Generator community, and conducting research to support fundraising initiatives. Project details are listed below.

Programming (35 hrs./week during summer camp weeks)

Support Summer Camps focused on enrichment in the arts, engineering, and emerging technology. Projects may include:

  • Welcoming campers and parents, support the lunch & recess hour.
  • Preparing program supplies and setting up educational spaces each day for the hands-on activities.
  • Assisting the Summer Camp Instructor by supporting student needs, helping students with their hands-on projects including:
    • building PinBox 3000, laser cutting, 3D printing, coding, electrifying projects, game design, woodshop and/metal projects for other camps
  • Supervising and instructing campers using laser cutter, 3D printer and vinyl cutter
  • Supporting camp check-in/check-out procedures, maintaining a safe learning environment, and fostering an inclusive camp community
     

Digital Media Support (5-20 hrs./week)

Support the Communications Director in building Generator's brand awareness through strategic content creation and community storytelling. Projects may include:

  • Planning and executing photo shoots to expand the organization’s image library
  • Producing video content to showcase Generator classes, programs, and events
  • Writing blog posts to highlight Generator members and their creative work
  • Tracking & researching trends in craft, DIY/MYOG, and makerspace communities to inform content strategy
  • Pitching novel outreach initiatives to help Generator connect with new audiences

 

Fabrication Projects (5 - 20 hrs./week)

Gain hands-on experience with design, rapid prototyping, and small-scale manufacturing while contributing to Generator's in-house manufacturing needs. You'll have opportunities to:

  • Complete Generator's rapid prototyping tool trainings and certifications
  • Design and fabricate S.W.A.G and other items for Generator and other organizations. 
  • Support upgrades and improvements throughout Generator's facility

This position comes with a FREE Generator Makerspace Membership & tool training that may include Laser Cutting, 3D Printing, Vinyl Cutting, Sewing, and/or Metal Shop Trainings.

At the end of this experience, Innovation Hub staff at Middlebury will ask you to bring your experience into conversations about the Makerspace at Middlebury. You will be encouraged to meet with them to help with knowledge transfer, and you will have the option to stay involved in these conversations with the Makerspace student group if interested.
