Engineering Intern

The Village of Winnetka’s Water & Electric Department is seeking student applicants for the temporary position of Engineering Intern. This is position is expected to begin work in late-May and continue through August (approximately 10 to 12 weeks). The Engineering Intern will be responsible for supporting the Water & Electric Department in the planning, design, and administration of the water and electric distribution systems. This internship is designed to promote knowledge of water and electrical distribution systems.

Primary Duties:

  • Develop and maintain asset registries for water and electrical distribution equipment and infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain municipal contact list.
  • Develop and administer municipal surveys.
  • Assist with CAD drawing updates.
  • Assist with the digitization of Department records and processes.
  • Assist with field inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Full-time student of sophomore status or higher pursuing a degree in Engineering at an accredited college or university.
  • Working knowledge of electrical or mechanical engineering principles.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Access; GIS systems; and ability to learn other software programs.
  • Ability to read, clearly speak, and legibly write the English language.
  • Valid driver’s license.

This is a temporary position for the summer months in 2026. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours weekly. Work may be performed in outdoor conditions and/or in close proximity to vehicular traffic.

Hourly Rate Range: $20 - $25 per hour
