Engineering Intern
WORK OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this position is to provide undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering fields with practical, hands-on experience in municipal engineering. The intern will assist professional staff in the planning, design, permitting, inspection, and analysis of infrastructure projects that support the City’s transportation, water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.
This position offers exposure to real-world public works operations, capital project delivery, sustainability and resiliency initiatives, and engineering best practices. The internship promotes professional growth, technical development, and mentorship, while fostering interest in public sector service and workforce development within the City of Hallandale Beach.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist City Engineers and Project Managers in the design, drafting, and review of municipal infrastructure projects, including roadways improvements, stormwater drainage systems, water distributions, and sanitary sewer collection systems.
- Assist in field inspections and collect data to support project development and compliance with City standards.
- Prepare and revise engineering drawings, exhibits, and layouts using AutoCAD, or GIS software under the direction of engineering staff.
- Support field inspections, data collection, and construction observations to document progress and ensure compliance with City standards, specifications, and contract documents.
- Assist with basic engineering calculations, cost estimates, and quantity takeoffs.
- Support environmental sustainability and stormwater management initiatives.
- Compile and analyze technical data for reports, presentations, and GIS or CAD drawings.
- Participate in project meetings and prepare progress summaries or visual materials for internal use.
- Research engineering best practices, materials, or technologies applicable to municipal projects.
- Research and summarize engineering standards, materials, products, and sustainable design practices relevant to City infrastructure.
- Contribute to the City’s sustainability and resiliency initiatives, including evaluating green infrastructure, energy efficiency, and climate adaptation strategies.
- Assist in the collection and management of GIS data for utilities, stormwater systems, and transportation assets.
- Conduct field condition assessments and document findings through notes, photos, and digital data entry.
- Support the review of consultant design submittals, shop drawings, and as-built plans for accuracy and completeness.
- Observe construction activities to understand field implementation, safety standards, and quality control procedures.
- Analyze data from inspections, surveys, and reports to support decision-making and project documentation.
- Assist with preparation of grant applications, funding requests, and supporting documentation for infrastructure projects.
- Maintain organized project files and digital documentation in accordance with City recordkeeping requirements.
- Develop and present a final project summary or presentation highlighting internship activities, key accomplishments, and lessons learned.
- Provide general assistance to the Engineering Division and perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals and initiatives.
- Prepare and present a final project report or presentation summarizing internship activities and learning outcomes.
- Provides assistance to Engineering staff, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be currently enrolled or recently graduated within two (2) years from an accredited college or university degree program in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering field at a US accredited college or university. No experience required for this position.
- Completion of at least one (1) year of engineering coursework.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or related software preferred.
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles, construction practices, and public works operations.
- Familiarity with engineering design, drafting, and modeling tools, including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, presentations, and technical documentation. Ability to work collaboratively in a professional environment under the supervision of licensed engineers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort usually involving some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 20 pounds). May involve some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking or standing. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks require sound and visual perception and discrimination. Tasks require oral communications ability.
