Hours:

Must be available to work a 24-hour rotating swing shift. Must be available to be on stand-by as needed. Must live within a reasonable distance of the electric plant for times when on stand-by.

Position Objectives:

This is skilled and supervisory work operating mechanical equipment such as air compressors, generators, turbines, and steam boilers to provide utilities such as light, heat, or power for buildings by performing the following duties.

Work is performed on an assigned shift and consists of constantly observing the operating conditions of boilers, turbines, and associated equipment and manipulating controls to adjust conditions as necessary.  Incumbent supervises work of several subordinates.  A prescribed procedure is followed in normal work situations, but in emergencies, employee must exercise discretion and initiative in preventing an interruption of the power supply.  Work is evaluated by a superior through a review of logs, charts, and inspection.  Special instructions are received to cover unusual situations; otherwise only general supervision is received.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the work of subordinate operators and employees on each shift in the operation of boilers, generators, pumps, motors, compressors, water softening, and other plant equipment.
  • Monitors control board and regulates manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or shut down equipment.
  • Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
  • Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication, takes corrective action, where necessary, to ensure plant safety.
  • Records operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operators’ logbook.
  • Answers telephones to receive complaints or notification of trouble.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Requirements:

EducationGraduation from high school supplemented by training in mechanics and electricity.

Experience:  Experience in power plant operation.

A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.

License or Certification RequiredPossession of a Stationary Engineer’s license issued by the State of Ohio.

Physical Demands: Lift 50 lbs frequently and 100 lbs. occasionally; ability to carry 50 lbs. frequently; ability to climb stairs frequently and walk up to 8 hours a shift; ability to stoop, bend, twist, squat, and kneel frequently; ability to work in a dusty environment, in cold and hot weather, and in high humidity; ability to hear and speak clearly in a loud environment and over a radio; ability to work in areas of possible high noise – 87 decibel time weighted average; ability to wear a respirator.

Scheduling Demands and Constraints: Must be available to be on stand-by as needed.  Must live within a reasonable distance of the electric plant for times when on stand-by.

Must be available to work a 24-hour rotating swing shift.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Knowledge of

  • The operation of high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, and related auxiliary equipment.
  • The hazards and of necessary safety precautions applicable to the work.
  • Electrical substations and associated equipment.
  • Scada controls.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Analyze data relating to the operation of plant equipment and take appropriate action to improve operational efficiency. 
  • React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Recognize malfunctions in equipment and to determine proper corrective action.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work according to a prescribed routine.
  • Maintain necessary records.
  • Supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Have an 8th grade math level.
  • Basic computer skills.
