AI/ML Intern

AI/ML Intern - Omi Health

Hi 👋 I'm Jakob, Co-Founder and COO at Omi Health. We're looking for an AI/ML intern to help us build the intelligence layer that powers proactive pet healthcare. You'll work directly with our founding engineer on the AI systems that make Omi smart—from prompt engineering to agentic workflows.

About Us

Omi Health is building the future of proactive pet healthcare. The average pet parent only discovers health problems at the emergency vet—we're changing that. We combine at-home biomarker testing, AI-powered health insights, and veterinary concierge services to catch issues early. We're backed by top-tier VCs and founded by second-time founders from McKinsey and Harvard Business School.

The Role

This is a hands-on AI/ML internship where you'll focus on making our AI systems smarter, more reliable, and more capable. You'll work on the intelligence behind our App —the prompts, knowledge systems, and agentic workflows that power our health insights and veterinary concierge.

You'll report to our founding engineer and have regular 1:1s with me. We're committed to making this a genuine learning experience with structured feedback and mentorship.

What You'll Work On

  • Prompt engineering & optimization: Improve and iterate on prompts across our product—from biomarker interpretation to vet chat responses. Build evaluation frameworks to measure quality.
  • Knowledge graph development: Enhance and expand our health knowledge systems so Claude can reason better about pet health, symptoms, and recommendations.
  • Subagent architecture: Design and build specialized AI agents for specific tasks (research, triage, follow-up) that can be composed into larger workflows.
  • Agentic workflows: Build end-to-end AI workflows that can handle complex, multi-step tasks—from ingesting lab results to generating actionable health plans.
  • Evaluation & guardrails: Develop testing frameworks, quality metrics, and safety guardrails for our AI systems.

What We're Looking For

  • Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a degree in CS, ML, AI, or related field—graduate students or advanced undergrads preferred
  • Strong foundation in ML/AI concepts (transformers, LLMs, RAG, agents)
  • Hands-on experience with prompt engineering, LLM APIs, or AI application development (personal projects count!)
  • Comfortable with Python and basic software engineering practices
  • Genuine curiosity about how to make AI systems reliable and useful in high-stakes domains like healthcare
  • Bonus: experience with knowledge graphs, vector databases, or multi-agent systems

Mentorship & Feedback Structure

  • Weekly 1:1s with our founding engineer for technical guidance and project feedback
  • Bi-weekly check-ins with me (Jakob) on broader learning goals and career development
  • Mid-point review (around week 6-8) to assess progress and adjust goals
  • Final review with written feedback on your growth and contributions
  • Slack access for async questions and collaboration with the full team

Details

  • Compensation: $20/hour
  • Hours: 20+ hours/week (flexible scheduling)
  • Location: Remote (US-based preferred for timezone overlap)
  • Duration: 3-6 months, with potential to extend or convert to full-time

We're happy to work with your university to provide documentation for academic credit if applicable.

Send us:

  2. Brief note on why you're excited about AI in healthcare and what you'd want to learn
  3. Any relevant projects, papers, or work samples (GitHub, blog posts, research)
