KGNU Radio News Department Intern (CU PIIE)

Position Title: KGNU Radio News Department Intern

Host Organization: KGNU Community Radio – An independent, noncommercial community radio station licensed in Boulder and Denver and dedicated to serving its listeners.

Position Summary: The KGNU News intern assists in the daily production of local news stories on KGNU - the local community radio station. Responsibilities Include: Writing and producing local news headlines to be broadcast in our weekday morning news show. Preparing, recording, and editing audio interviews for broadcast in news and public affairs programs. Identifying and producing news stories on local news issues to be broadcast in our locally produced news shows, including our weekday local news show, Morning Magazine, and other public affairs shows as needed. Preparing and posting aired stories to the KGNU.org website and social media sites. This position reports to the KGNU News Director and will work closely with the KGNU news staff.

Qualifications: Some journalism experience, either in newsrooms or through journalism classes News media literacy - keeps up-to-date on the news Ability to reliably show up to a fast-paced early morning shift Ability to work collaboratively with a team, and to thrive with a constant feedback loop Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced newsroom Preferred Qualifications: Ability to embrace constructive feedback/edits Passionate about local journalism Willingness to learn Creative, with an eye for detail Soft skills - we are willing and able to teach you more technical work Bilingual in Spanish and English Demonstrated experience working with volunteers Experience writing and distributing newsletters Knowledge of AP style

Ideal candidates should have a willingness to learn, embrace constructive feedback/edits, and have a love for local journalism. We always appreciate people who are creative and have an eye for detail. We are interested in soft skills, as we are willing and able to teach you how to do the more technical work.

This is a unique opportunity to actively engage in local media production, on-air hosting, recording, and community-engaged journalism.

On-site: The balance ends up generally being 75% on-site, 25% hybrid. However, this can be accommodated as the needs of the intern/News Department change. This internship will require recording on studio-quality equipment, which will require being at KGNU. Other parts of the internship can be done remotely (social media posting, design, editing, etc.), so part of this internship may be remote.
