Motor Equipment Operator II

Duties: MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II duties and responsibilities may include, but not limited to: 

General Duties:

·        Individual will operate light and medium duty motor equipment such as pickup trucks, dump trucks with/without trailer, tractor with attachments, turf mowing equipment may be trained for operating heavier equipment.

·        Establish performance standards.

·        Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and departmental needs. 

Specialty Areas May Include the Following Duties:

Roadway Maintenance duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

·       Complete grounds maintenance work assignments including pruning, right of way mowing, removing trees and other visual obstructions, grading surfaces, and maintaining landscape, mostly along the city's roadways.

·      Implement the use of equipment when and where needed to accomplish overall plan-of-the-day. Candidate will be required to have a good working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all equipment used daily including trucks, truck and trailer combinations, tractor-mounted flail mowers, backhoes, front end loaders and skid steer loaders.

·       Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by these duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and departmental needs.

 

LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

·       Individual will operate light and medium duty motor equipment such as pickup trucks, dump trucks with/without trailer, tractor with attachments, turf mowing equipment - Maybe trained Assist crews engaged in landscape maintenance and construction, mowing, fertilizing, seeding, and sod installation.

·       Establish performance standards.

·       Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by these duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and departmental needs.

 

TREE REMOVAL duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

·       Complete grounds maintenance work assignments including removal and pruning of large trees and other visual obstructions and maintaining landscape vegetation, mostly along the city’s roadways.

·       Proficient in the use of specialized pruning equipment such as chainsaws, pole pruners, pole saws.

·       Team leader of bucket truck crew Set up complex road closures.

·        Operate and haul a variety of medium to heavy-duty landscape and construction equipment such as chippers, swap body trucks, dump trucks, backhoe/loader, skid steer and combination vehicles.

·       Proficient in the operation and maintenance of bucket and knuckle boom truck.

 

NOTE: All positions require a Class A Commercial Driver's License or must obtain within six (6) months of hire. There is a $4,000 sign-on bonus for newly hired employees with a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for this position. The bonus will be divided into three bonus increments:

 

·       First $1,000.00 bonus will be issued with the first paycheck.

·       Second $1,000.00 bonus will be issued upon the six (6) month evaluation with an overall performance of “Meets Expectations"

·      Third $2,000.00 bonus will be issued upon the one (1) year evaluation with an overall performance of “Meets Expectations"

MINIMUMS: Requires completion of the tenth (10th) grade, plus two (2) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Driver's license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
