The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

Reporting to the HVAC Supervisor at a multi-custody male correctional facility, this position's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Providing journey level work in the areas of Heating/Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

2. Designing, installing services and repairing HVAC energy control management systems in renovations and construction.

3. Assisting in installing electrical conduit and wiring for HVAC electricals circuits.

4. Performing preventive maintenance.

5. Instructing lower level assistants and offenders in performing less technical repairs.

6. Providing technical guidance and support to other staff members in HVAC energy control management system.

7. Working by instruction from supervisor, by policies, the NC building code manuals, OSHA regulations, and safety policies.

8. Requiring great physical effort in the installation, repair and removal of HVAC systems.

9. Working with close custody and minimum custody offenders and having frequent contact with those offenders.

10. Performing repairs on equipment outside his/her specialty trade as needed.

11. Being diversified and having general knowledge of several trades.


(Salary Range: $37,782 - $66,120)

Documented knowledge of practices, methods, materials and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

 

About Central Prison

Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers. 


While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Necessary Special Qualifications: Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
