Literacy Counselor Intern

 Literacy Counselor Intern

 Seasonal, Non-exempt

Major Responsibility:  This position is responsible for collaborating in the delivery of a high-quality, literacy-focused summer program for Baltimore City elementary-aged students. The core objective of the role is to contribute to improving reading and math skills while significantly increasing environmental literacy and exposure to the natural world as a vital part of the SuperKids Camp team. The Counselor Intern also maintains the safety and welfare of a class of 15-18 students.

Reports To:  Site Coordinator

Essential Functions:  

 

  1. Assist with the Delivery of Instruction
  • Co-deliver engaging, interactive, literacy-based lessons and math review sessions provided by Parks & People.
  • Lead daily social-emotional activities to help students build confidence and teamwork
  • Inspire student engagement around environmental stewardship and foster a positive, constructive camp culture.
  • Collaborate with the Counselor on lesson planning and instructional delivery methods.
  • Ensure smooth and timely transitions between daily activities, maintaining adherence to the camp schedule.
  • Assist with management and submission of daily attendance and necessary camp documentation.
  • Support enrichment providers with the implementation of specialized activities.
  • Implement positive classroom management and behavioral strategies in accordance with camp guidelines and policy.
  • Assist in the completion of bi-weekly academic reports and support the delivery of pre- and post-camp assessments.
  • Maintain detailed student records, including performance metrics and disciplinary actions.
  • Actively participate in staff planning meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Contribute to other camp activities as requested, embodying the camp's spirit and mission.
  • Serve as a positive role model for campers, demonstrating leadership and commitment to good environmental stewardship.

 

  1. Assist with Supervision of Participants
  • Ensure that all students are actively engaged in the learning process
  • Apply positive behavioral and classroom management techniques to maintain a constructive learning environment.
  • Ensure students behave in a safe, respectful, and orderly manner
  • Supervise students during planned field trips, outdoor exploration experiences, and enrichment activities
  • Support the team with meal distribution and clean-up, as needed.

 

  1. Participate in the Internship Program
  • Mandatory attendance at orientation and all scheduled learning sessions
  • Timely submission of all required program assignments

 Qualifications: 

Requirements 

  • Be a rising freshman, sophomore, or junior at a 2 or 4-year post-secondary institution
  • Ability to assist with the delivery of lesson plans and instructions appropriate for the grade level
  • Ability to connect and communicate with youth
  • Ability to make accommodations for the diverse learner
  • Good oral/written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills needed to inspire and motivate students
  • Good time management skills needed to handle multiple, concurrent classroom activities that serve the needs of students
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others

Preferences 

 

  • Background or strong interest in education (elementary, special, secondary, environmental) or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of different learning styles and methods of content delivery
  • Previous experience working with youth programs

Mandatory Schedule & Attendance

Attendance at all orientation and training sessions is mandatory. We are unable to accommodate vacations or outside commitments during the following dates:

June 13: New Staff Orientation

June 17: Internship Orientation

June 22 – 26: Staff Training Week (Full Week)

June 29 – August 6: Active Camp Season

August 5: Intern Dinner and Final Presentations

August 7: Last Day of SuperKids Camp
