Position Mission

The Director, Ambulatory Care & Service Lines, Dermatology & Psychiatry offers an exciting opportunity for a strategic and visionary leader to oversee key service lines for Stanford Health Care. This position directs the strategy and implementation of clinical operations that impact quality and financial performance outcomes for the health system. As an essential member of the Ambulatory Care & Service Lines team, the Director has responsibility for all aspects of clinical operations including staffing, quality and regulatory oversight, patient experience, and financial management. Partnering with key departments across the organization, this position is essential in driving operational excellence and strategic growth while integrating services across SHC’s extensive network to deliver cost-effective care in a safe and efficient work environment.

The Director, Dermatology & Psychiatry Service Line (Psychiatry is inclusive of Sleep Medicine, which is a distinct program) reports to the Vice President, Service Lines (one of four VP, Service Lines positions). Also reporting to the Vice President is:

  • Director, Ophthalmology, Service Line & Emeryville / Tri-Valley Operations

The Director of Ambulatory Care & Service Lines, Dermatology & Psychiatry directly oversees the following positions:

  • Clinic Manager, Dermatology
  • Clinic Manager, Psychiatry / IM
  • Clinic Manager, Sleep Clinic

The position manages a total team of approximately 147 FTEs at 10 clinic locations with 240+ providers and more than 200k annual patient visits.

 

Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications and experience:

Education & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Administration or a related field is required. A master’s degree in one of these areas is preferred.
  • Eight or more years of increasingly responsible and directly related experience in a large, complex academic medical center. Ambulatory care service line experience a plus.
  • Dermatology and/or Psychiatry experience a plus.
  • Strong expertise with Lean, JIT or Six Sigma techniques preferred.

First-Year Aspirations

The new Director, Dermatology & Psychiatry Service Line will be expected to achieve the following goals in the first twelve to eighteen months of their tenure: 

  • Build rapport and instill trust with the Vice President Service Lines, service line peers, School of Medicine Chair and Dermatology and Psychiatry Service Line clinicians and staff.
  • Critically and comprehensively evaluate processes, modes of care delivery and outcomes to ensure that operations, quality initiatives and service delivery are efficiently delivered across the service line with a focus on maintaining flow, ensuring patient satisfaction, and delivering high quality outcomes across the continuum of care.
  • Collaborate with medical directors and multidisciplinary teams to ensure Dermatology & Psychiatry service line alignment with Stanford Medicine’s mission and vision.
  • Work closely with key partners across the enterprise to develop, implement and refine a comprehensive Dermatology & Psychiatry Service Line that will promote operational excellence, grow business, improve quality, and increase staff engagement to achieve breakthrough performance. 
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for new and innovative programs and/or expansion opportunities including new care models that improve margins and financial efficiencies.
  • Work closely with Ambulatory Quality leaders to set the population health strategy and lead system-wide collaboration for Dermatology & Psychiatry population health interventions to meet targets.
  • Foster a culture of quality improvement and patient safety, leading initiatives that enhance clinical outcomes.
  • In a performance-driven approach to problem solving, use data and outcomes to fuel continuous improvement in financial, clinical, and operational performance.
  • Effectively manage budgets, financial planning and resource allocation to ensure the sustainability and growth of the Dermatology & Psychiatry service line.
  • Support a learning culture where process improvement and LEAN thinking are encouraged and rewarded.
  • Infuse a climate of unwavering service excellence across the Dermatology & Psychiatry Service Line to continue to build Stanford Health Care’s reputation across the service area.
