Targeted Hiring Range $72, 000.00 - $87,000.00 Based on Experience and Education
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for performing professional architectural design work, as well as supervising the architectural team, contracted architectural services and providing architectural oversight for Engineering construction projects throughout the City. Reports to the Director of Engineering.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs complex professional architectural work that includes preparing conceptual design plans and specifications for consultants and completing full design work and construction documentation to include schematics and cost estimates for internal or contracted projects. Responsible for supervising staff Architects including employee selection, performance management, employee relations, and related activities; reviews architectural drawings, construction specifications and schematics for a variety of projects; verifies cost estimates for in-house projects; monitors the implementation of design plans; ensures compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations. Oversees engineering support for City projects and coordinates with other City departments or agencies, design consultants, inspectors, and other involved parties. Attends pre-bid, pre[1]construction and progress meetings; monitors production schedules. Researches modification requests and change orders; processes invoices for payment. Conducts studies and special projects such as space planning, structural analysis and other related architectural concerns; provides reports and analyses; makes recommendations for improvements. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE · Architecture – Thorough knowledge of modern architecture methods, principles and practices; knowledge of construction drawings, specifications and blueprints. Knowledge of Uniform Building Codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to construction and remodeling. · Project Management – Knowledge of planning, organizing and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. · Supervision – Knowledge of leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign, schedule, supervise, train, and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
REQUIRED SKILLS · Computer Skills – Utilizes AutoCAD (Computer Aided Design) or related software programs. Utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, and related software to effectively complete a variety of administrative assignments. · Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and all levels of management to include representatives from other departments and organizations. Effectively handles inquiries, complaints from or disputes with customers. · Judgment/Decision Making – Uses logic and reasoning to understand, analyze and evaluate situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.
REQUIRED ABILITIES · Communication – Ability to communicate ideas effectively, including the preparation of detailed reports and logs. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas being presented verbally and in writing. Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues with tact and diplomacy and in a confidential manner. · Coordination of Work – Ability to establish and implement effective administrative procedures. Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology. Performs a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering and 5 - 7 years experience in professional architectural work with 2-3 years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must possess and maintain a valid Architect license from the State of Virginia.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS · Requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. · Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). · Tasks may involve extended periods of time at keyboard or work station. SENSORY REQUIREMENTS · Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. · Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
