Job Description: Park and Recreation Intern (Seasonal)

City of Volga, South Dakota

Position Summary

The Park and Recreation Intern assists with the planning, coordination, and implementation of parks and recreation programs for the City of Volga. This position supports the Community Engagement Coordinator with recreation practices, camps, and events while providing leadership and supervision to youth employees. The Intern helps ensure participant safety, maintains facilities and equipment, and promotes a positive recreation experience for all participants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, scheduling, and implementing recreation programs, practices, camps, and special events.
  • Supervise youth employees and seasonal staff during recreation activities.
  • Maintain accurate records including attendance logs, staff time sheets, and staff performance documentation.
  • Attend and/or officiate evening ball games at all levels throughout the season.
  • Communicate daily with parents, coaches, and participants.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • Manage recreation equipment.
  • Assist with maintenance and preparation of recreation facilities and ball fields.
  • Work closely with the Community Engagement Coordinator and assist as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old by May 1.
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certification required by June 1.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage programs independently.
  • Experience working with youth programs or recreation preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Work Schedule

This is a seasonal position with varied hours including evenings and weekends. Schedule and hours are dependent on programming and staffing needs. Approximately 30-40hrs/week.

Compensation

Starting wage: $16–$17 per hour (DOE/Q).
